@zorglub - Thanks for these shots. The tearing of the stars near the edges of the 15mm shot could be coma which is common in many lenses at wide open apertures. The 100mm 80 second shot is impressive.

Add to that, Pentax has never been known for adding new features to out of production cameras, even features that seem Simple to add. They've never appeared to be interested in dedicating the resource to it.

Hm... probably not entirely correct as they update the firmware for K10 to operate SDM lenses?

Would like to know why you choose to use ISO 80 and aperture f5.6?

I would think you could capture more stars with higher iso and larger aperture?

The K10d was still in production when they introduced the SDM lenses. It's also possible that the feature was always there and just needed to be turned on, just like the remote assistant (which didn't work until v1.02). The only update on the K10d recently was done for all the cameras to improve functionality for the SDHC cards.

@LFLee, Next time I will do a complete series of say f2.8, 5.6, 8 and 11 and ISO 80/200/400 and 800 shots to compare, but my initial thoughts were low noise and best optical quality, so f5.6 and ISO 80 :-)

I think the real test, at least for me, will be how it captures one of the large objects such as Andromeda or the Pleiades.

I ordered mine today from Amazon but they are out of stock. I am curious how long it will take as I want to use it before the 10th for some meteor shower and comet shooting.

I got my O-GPS1 today (from FotoKoch in Germany). I'm quite impressed and happy I got one. I works great:

het gps gedeelte werkt prima.

de astrotracer functie werkt niet.

de atrotracer werkt met de shake reduction.

als de de k-5 instelt op bulb en mf,
wordt de shake reduction uitgeschakeld
en is ook niet handmatig in te stellen.

pic's maken is een mislukking

wie kent dit probleem en heeft een oplossing!!!!!

I'm only guessing now since I don't have the unit, yet.
But you should not use bulb mode, use a special astrotracker mode found somewhere in the menus. Or at least that is what I think you should do.

Cool shot, can't wait to get mine! I wonder if the fringing surrounding the stars is a result of over exposure, or shooting with the lens wide open? Was the exposure time at this focal length pushing the stated limits of the astrophotography timing?

I tried several shots at 2 minutes but the drift was quite noticeable. I am amazed that I can do 1 minute at 250mm with this little drift. I think that some of it originates from my rather unstable mounting solution (tripod on top of a garden table!) but I have a telescope mount that I am planning to piggy bag it on to.

Can't wait to see your shots pxpaulx! :-)

Edit: Oh I forgot to tell you that it gave me between 2.20 and 2.30 at 250mm. At 60mm it told me 5 minutes.
