Location Photo Shoot BTS Video

Hey Folks!

Here's a behind the scenes video for a recent assignment shoot I did for American Cowboy magazine. We were working on capturing a lead photo to open the "gear" section of their magazine, which would be reviewing shirts and pants. All stills and video were captured on the K-5.

Hopefully this'll be a fun look at what it's like to do an editorial location shoot. These types of shoot are always very different than just out shooting, having fun, since you're primary goal is to realize someone else's idea, and in a way that looks good and works in a layout. The Editor-in-Chief wanted to use an old truck. The Gear Editor/stylist picks the wardrobe. The Art Director is on set, making sure that the images have the look they were going for, and that they will work with the page layout.

When shooting with editorial clients in mind, whether by assignment or shooting stock for future sales, it's important to remember that for something to get used, it has to not only be the image they are looking for, but also has to fit into layout, design and space. With assignments, it is somewhat easier, since you know a lot of hte details ahead of time. We were shooting for a single, right page, that needs space for a head at the top, and a small text box at the bottom. So, all the shots were composed accordingly (except the last one, which is a horizontal that I just saw a moment I liked, and took it, between the real shots).

When shooting stock for future uses, the most important thin is to shoot as many options as possible. You don't know if someone will need a horizontal or a vertical, so shoot both. You don't know if someone will need lots of space for text, or would like a full image to run with nothing over it, so shoot both. I've heard lots and lots of stories or photo editors who have to trash an image they love because it won't work in layout. Taking a great looking image is only half the equation. Always shoot as many options as you can think of!

Hope you enjoy the video!

Cheers,

Ben
