Well Leica X1 or Fuji x100 are very nice camera's for those one lens only options.

On the original question -- someone may have already responded thus, I haven't reviewed all the answers (no coffee yet this morning!) but:

If we can have only one lens, why bother owning an interchangeable-lens camera?

What we're getting here are answers to, What's My Favorite Lens? If I didn't want to change lenses, I'd stick to Dad's old Minolta Autocord with the Chiyoko Rokkor 75/3.5. Or maybe get a G10 or whatever.

(Ah, the coffee's ready. Well, it's depresso -- decaf espresso -- but maybe it'll help me think more clearly and elevate my mood. The Autocord needs a CLA anyway.)
I don't think the original intent of the thread was a practicality or convenience question, but simply finding out what the one lens people adore most. Let's say giving the situation where one must sell all but one of his lens (but he still have enough to keep the body), which one would it be.

Because I want to use my FA77.

Name a digital camera that comes with a fixed lens as good as that?

APS-c: DA 35mm/2.8 LTD

Autofocus Film: FA 50mm/1.4

Manual Focus Film: A 50/1.2 ( the K28mm/2 would be a very close second)

M42 Film: Super Tak 50mm/1.4 8 element version

These are lenses I own. Otherwise, I may consider the FA 43/1.9 in lieu of the 50/1.4.

I am going to cheat on this one, I may, I just cooked dinner, it is soon to be eaten, a big chicken and ad ons, I had a guinness, I feel good.
I will hold on to my da55 1.4, for dreams and walks in the haze and the mist, and I will not let go off it, never.
Cheat: I will carry secretely my super tak. 24mm 3.5 and slip in my jacket pocket the preset 105. I am done. This is as was and probably will always be.

Bonjour,

If it were to be a "zoom", then my latest acquisition: SMC M 75-150mm f4 (as others have said, a "stack of primes") ...

If it were to be a prime, then I'll go with my best prime to date: D FA 100mm f2.8 Macro WR ...

If it were a "wish list" lens, then a FA 43mm f1.9 Ltd or a FA 77mm f1.8 Ltd ... cannot decide which one, but "just keep saving up, keep saving up ... for the K-5 & the Ltd's" (repeat again & again)...

I guess the Long and short of it (with extension tubes) for me it would have to be the DA*300mm F4. After a week of ownership, from it's release, the Bigma was sold. It was the first lens that evoked a feeling of 3D, and I'm still surprised by its close focus applications.

Though possibly it should be the A*200mm F4 macro, on the basis of cost!

Of my actual lenses, I would take my Sigma 24/2.8 . I value FOV a lot, and APS-C 24mm just seems to work for me. (I have thought about acquiring a u4/3 camera and 17mm prime to have a carry-around at my favorite FOV in a smaller/lighter format.) After FOV, my next considerations are size and weight, which is why I have stuck to the Sigma over (an available) FA*24/2.

On the other hand, for a recent trip I took the DA 15/4 and the FA 35/2. Overall flexibility seemed more important than FOV favoritism . . .

DA70. I'd spend the rest of my days taking intimate candids. And die happy.

+1 more for FA 31 Ltd. I have it, not the other 2 amigos. So, how many votes do we have now for the 31mm vs the 77 & 43?
