10 000 iso

Preparing for a new project, I was testing shooting handheld in Tungsten light (one ARRILIGHT 800 Watt torch). Here you see the difference between shot on tripod at 80 ISO (pic. #1) and 'handheld' at 10 000 ISO (actually the camera was still on the tripod because I was to lazy and wanted exactly the same framing). For the 10 000 ISO, in LR3, I set the luminance noise at 50 an did a little sharpening for the details.
This a simple setup just a little 'playing' notting serious (yet)

, but most of the colours where represented...
K5 + AF 50 mm @ F1:8
Note that the 10 000ISO is a little less saturated (green), I didn't touch that neither...

You can definitely see some loss of sharpness in the 10,000ISO one, but damn, that's not bad at all!

Looks pretty good to me as well.
ISO 10,000 is certainly useable for web sized images.

Wow, I've never pushed my K-5 that high, but that does look mighty fine for ISO 10,000!

Impressive result you got there. I can hardly believe my eyes when I saw it's taken at ISO 10,000.

Well I sometimes use it, even up to 51.200 and it is nice, just to capture things that other wise stay in the dark. Mostly I go to black/white for iso 6400 and up.

Beats the hell out of using Tri-X. I remember when ISO 800 was not even close to being this good.

That is impressive. It even looks like the ISO 10,000 shot is slightly over exposed which could account for an appearance of being less sharp especially the text on the Fujifilm box.

I think the overexposed look is more the result of the reduced dynamic range at higher ISOs.

ISO is complicated and only more complicated when comparing what an equivalent film ISO would have been. I have a tendency to be baffled by the numbers. However, as remarkable as these high ISO numbers sound, I wonder if digital camera marketing has just taken over?

Supports my theory that the best noise control is a proper exposure. I've tried high ISO but nothing this controlled, just shots in the dark which gave me lots of noise.

That is impressive, and does reflect the power of the K5 sensor when properly used. I have found that I can get decent prints, ones that satisfy my need well up past ISO 6400.......getting the right exposure is, as mentioned, key to the end result.

I have an 8x10 of this one, looks better than it does on screen.....
1/200 (speed is also key) F7.1 @500mm ISO 8,000 I think I was about 40-50ft away from the target.

Overall, I have been well pleased with the new abilities presented by the K5. It certainly expands the opportunities to get a shot without flash.

I get bad banding when I push my ISO, although it is fixable in post. I'm guessing you didn't have any banding issues?

The K5 should have barely any banding at all. You should take it for servicing

What's banding?

What stroke me was that it was so easy to go till 10 000 ISO (and beyond)...
I suspected more work in PP to get it right, honestly, at these dimensions here, on the screen, NR wasn't really necessarily...
Perhaps, I should have raised the saturation a bit, but if one shouldn't have seen the first picture, he shouldn't know...
