K5 + O-GPS1 + DA* 16-50mm problem

at first i thought my 3yr old da* 16-50mm is having the infamous sdm drive problem, then i figured out when i use it with ogps1 in the hot shoe (doesn't have to be on), the sdm on the lens doesn't work (manual works). now i can duplicate the problem without fail. all my screw drive lens work fine. i don't have any other sdm lens to check further. anyone else having the same problem? hard to imagine why.

edit: sometimes, if i remove the ogps-1 and use it for a while, then put the ogps back, sdm works again. hit and miss though.

That's sounds very bizaar. There are only a couple of people on the forum with the GPS unit, not sure if they have SDM lenses though. I think "LaurenOE" (sp?) has one for example, maybe try PM'ing that user to see.

Sorry to point to a possible issue but an obvious one:

Have you updated the firmware of your K-5?

The firmwares 1.10 & 1.11 solves some issues:

"Version 1.11
  • Fixed handling of GPS data when developing RAW images where GPS data is present."
"Version 1.10
  • Added support for the GPS Unit O-GPS1."

{http://www.pentaximaging.com/support/manuals-and-literature/}

Hope that the comment will help.

yup i'm using 1.11. since i'm going on a trip tomorrow, for now, i'll just have to go through the rituals to get sdm working. or not using ogps with 16-50mm. but it's so convenient to have the gps data automatically recorded

Verry odd.

You can be sure (well, almost ) that Pentax tried SDM+OGPS1 before shipping.

So, you have a warranty issue and should contact Pentax to get it fixed. It may be both, OGPS1 or DA16-50 which cause the trouble.

E.g., OGPS1 drawing too much current (like with a partial shortage) or DA16-50 being on the edge of things needing full power to work w/o fail. You may try with another power source (e.g., a 6 AA grip).

After reading your post, I decided to see if my 50-135 would have any problem with the O-GPS1 on my K-5, and it's fine (Yes!!). So there's one GPS-SDM combination that passes. I imagine you checked that the GPS was correctly (completely) mounted in the hot shoe so that full electrical contact was being made?

Sorry can't reproduce the problem, here, with DA*16-50 nor DA*300 with the O-GPS1. Maybe it only occurs with certain co-ordinates!

i think there's something wrong with my 16-50mm. i dropped the lens and the zoom ring stopped working one day. the next day, it started working again. after this incident, i don't have any more problems as described in the original post. oh well...

For goodness sake don't put such information in print... especially ahead of a warranty claim. But worth getting the repair, for some reason I didn't enjoy the lens on the K20d, but it came back to life on the K5.
