K5 and SDXC card???

Simple question, but i've not seen this in any thread I could find on the forums......has anyone tried a SDXC card in their K5 yet? I've finally got up the cash to buy a K5 and some extras, but i'm wondering if getting an SDXC card vs a SDHC is more worthwhile investment.

I'd be very interested in peoples' replies.

Thank you.

For the K-5 I figure an SDXC card isn't worth it. Why? Well, who needs to be able to shoot over 1k images on one card? And then again, if something happened to the card or it malfunctioned, you'd lose all the more pictures. My pholosophy is to run smaller cards (like 8GB ones) and have several. BTW, I get around 350 photos on an 8GB card and that's shooting RAW too.

However, if I were shooting the 645D then I'd definitely be into SDXC cards.

Just my 2 cents.

Ditto. SDXC does not seem worth while. I use mainly 16 & 8 gig cards, but change them out if I shoot anything I could not stand to lose. I know the 16g cards are overkill, but I just like having the capacity, just in case.

Thanks for the responses. After I created this thread and logged out, I saw that one thread with the K5 & SDXC was a problem with using an SDXC card.

I do have various SDHC cards and was wondering if the SDXC would be good for using with video mode?

I mainly use 32 GB cards, SanDisk PRO UHS-I 45 MB/s. Have stil one 16 GB classe 10 card as back-up and a 32 GB classe 10 back-up. There are new cards on their way, SDXC with up to 64 GB space and up to 90 MB/s writespeed. As far as I know we can use up to 64 GB cards in our K-5. Never used them, since the first generation of SDXC are rather slow in writespeed (max of 15 MB/s).

I thought the K5 is not PRO UHS compatible (ie you don't get the speed advantage, but it works nonetheless)

correct, but at home it does deliver the speed uploading to the computer.

Yes. Just get a fast one if you want full HD, for example Sandisk Pro cards are very good and not really expensive. For 720p video even a Class 6 card is enough (heck, I can record 5 minutes 720p 30fps video with sound even on my old Sandisk Ultra II card, didn't try longer recordings).

The only way I could see using bigger cards is if you want to shoot a lot of video.

Still, even then, you are probably better getting several smaller cards, so that if one has problems, you don't lose everything.

never thought of that.- I'm not really bothered about havign larger capacity cards for the K-5. I use 16GB's and only occasioanlly get annoyed becasue I run out of sapce duringa crucial time.

however it does take an awful longtime to load them onto the computer when I get home, so I think I'm going to look into SDXC cards fro this reason. I assume you need a compatible card reader?

I'm busy with it at the time. I just installed a USB 3 port in my PC, but don't have a USB 3 cardreader at the time. So my SanDisk Pro UHS-I 45MB/s cards only run up to 19 MB/s at the moment. I have a cardreader on order, so I think in one/two weeks (my brother handles those things) I can test and use the speed of those cards.

The speed of USB 3 is exceptional compared with USB 2. I have an external harddisc in a USB 3 housing and with USB 2 it gets a max of 29 MB/s and with USB 3 it runs it's original max of 130 MB/s.

Yup I think that's right- you can take advantage of the 64gb/128gb cards, but the max speed is probably class 6 or 10 (I'm not sure on that).

If I lose my current ebay bids then I may look into that 128GB SDXC card. Thanks for the link Adam!
