Normal lens reccomendation

So I'm loving my Limited lenses on my K-5 but I'm having a mental block and need some help.

Back in the film days I used to love to shoot (and still have!) my MX with a wonderful M 50mm 1.4.

I'm trying to figure out what would be the closest thing to this combo on the K-5. I have the 35 LTD Macro, and it's great, but it's also 2.8. The 31mm LTD has filter issues, and AF/MF switching issues. (I have the 43mm - too long - and the 77mm is way too long obviously.)

Maybe the Sigma 30mm 1.4?

I'm actually surprised Pentax doesn't make a 33mm F1.9 DA LTD....

Thanks for any thoughts or ideas!

I like my FA35/2.0. I also considered buying an NX100 and an NX 30mm pancake for a compact solution.

What do you mean
The 31mm LTD has filter issues, and AF/MF switching issues.

Not sure about the filter but by AF/MF I guess OP means no quick shift.

C'mon and just admit it. You're just looking for a justification to buy another lens... Right?

I am like you, I love my 50mm 1.4 lens, on my K1000 (which still sees use once in awhile). On my K5 I use mostly my 28mm - f2.8 (KA mount), which cannot give me the narrow depth of field I like. I must admit, that Sigma looks really nice…..

I know that, I also felt the gap between 21mm and 35mm monofocal too big. I finally settled with fa*24.

There is the Sigma 28mm/1.8 and the Samyang/Rokinon 35/1.4

I can't comment on the expensive stuff. But 'normal' for nominal APS-C is 30mm; for my K20D it's 28mm. And I find my cheap (US$18) manual Vivitar-Komine 28/2 CFWA to be my most useful 'normal' lens. I also have and love a Vivitar-Kiron 24/2, slightly wider and great, but 28mm just looks like a better FOV to me. And I'm a bit bored by 35mm.

For FOV and DOF, the closest analogue to your old 50/1.4 on 135/FF would be a 30/1, and good luck finding such. Nearest available approximation would be the 30/1.4. Yeah, there should be a PILE of 28/1.4 and 30/1.4 lenses from all the makers -- where are they?!? And where's my atomic helicopter?

I just saw ZK 28/2 on an auction site... I'd like that. But too expensive... :-(

The 31mm takes 58mm filters and doesn't have quick shift. I guess those factors in themselves could be considered drawbacks, but they are minor issues compared to the superb IQ you get from the lens. I just post-processed a ton of images last night from the DA12-24 & FA31 which just reinforced for me that the difference in IQ is remarkable between those 2 lenses, the FA31 is breathtakingly sharp and the colours are gorgeous compared to the DA. I really wish all my lenses could have the IQ of my FA31, but I suspect to achieve that I'd have to become a Leica shooter

Pentax make a 31mm f1.8, so making a 33mm f1.9 as well would be nuts. They've already got too many primes in this range.

Honestly I think the FA31 is so far and away the best "normal" lens in Pentax mount it isn't funny. The only real drawback to the lens is cost, and for many this is an issue. I think it's worth every cent if buying it doesn't hurt financially.

+1. The FA31mm f1.8 Lt is a great length with outstanding IQ. Fast enough for low light. Very useful focal length. And a superb IQ. My best prime... IMHO

Well, they also make a 70mm and 77mm and that's not "nuts." I have the 77mm and think I'd rather have the 70. I like the focus shift and smaller size.

So when you say the 31mm takes 58mm filters, doesn't that also mean IT ONLY takes 58mm filters? Could I put a 58mm to 77mm adaptor on it and use my 77mm filters? Or does the lens hood get in the way?
