Thank you very much. 3-4m maximum.
Now that makes a bit more sense on the photo detail, and also explains your post on the comparitive mimimum focus distance. You are getting very very close to the birds. I certainly am impressed with your patience and disguise skills. Now we need a photo of you hidden while shooting bird...should be fun

Here is about the best I have been able to get out of the 170-500, slight crop but not at 500mm end. This was a luck shoot as the bird landed in front of me and stayed for a minute. On mono-pod, while on a small boat, so SR did it work. But still think the 50-500 is a notch up on IQ.

Thank you Kevin. I think your shooting at high ISO, I see some over noise effects on your photo. Can I get details your photo shoot (EXIF)? Greetings...

Wow, that's close. Are you shooting from a blind or are you camouflaged?
I camouflaged. Regards...

Yes, you are right, this was ISO400. Rest was1/2000s f/8 170mm. I had the ISO up because I was nervous of camera (on small speed boat) and also bird movement at 500mm and the T was often at 1/250s. The light was intermittant with thick cloud. So perhaps not best low noise image.

ISO400 problem at CCD sensored bodies. You must not over ISO320 for good detailed photos (especially birding photography). Do you take your photos at RAW mode? If yes; please upload RAW result of this photo and write the link to me. Kind Regards...
