Mike, I was offline for a few days. Thank you for your comment, but I am not sure if I'm qualified to give you an advice. But for what it's worth:
1. For me it is important to know which pose of a horse and which moment in a motion just look good (or sometimes look bad, if I want to show "bad riding").
2. If you shoot something you like a lot it is easy to forget the basics of good composition. Just be aware of that.
3. Like in all action and sport photography you need to anticipate what is going to happen and to consider the small delay between pushing the button and the actual capture.
4. Take a lot of photos and have fun!
