K-5 Manual VS autofocus weird difference

Hello.

Just got my K-5 week ago and absolutely love it. But i did find this interesting thing that the manual focus doesn´t confirm in the correct distance, it beeps a little bit behind the correct distance and sometimes a little bit in front of the correct distance, but when i use autofocus it is always spot on. I´ve tested this with the 18-55 WR kit lens so far. Any help here?

still need AF adjust

Since the camera will FF or RF the same in AF or MF, you still need to do the AF adjustment for your lenses. I just shot the Italian Market with my camera club and got great results shooting mostly MF. Using FA 31, DFA 50 and FA 77, all with their AF adjustments were all dead on. Give it a try if you haven't yet. Otherwise, I am not sure. Dave

I never rely on that beep in manual focus, better to turn it off and when focus confirmation is needed watch green hexagon in VF

First off all, you really have to turn the focus ring slowly; for most AF lenses that should read 'very, very slowly' as the throw is very short. So when you hear the beep and stop turning the ring (0.3 sec reaction time or so?), you will already be out of focus again; old manual focus lenses have long throws and are easier from that perspective.

The green hexagon is indeed the reference, not the beep.

Also, there is a bit of a range. Once you have focus confirmation (from the green haxagoon), you can still turn the focus ring a little without the hexagon disappearing; not sure how much this applies to the kit lens.

Lastly (related to range), it sometimes depends if you manual focus coming from infinity or from nearby which one gives the best result. With my K5 with the standard viewfinder matte screen, I can quite well rely on the view in the viewfinder to see if something is in focus or not so I rely less on the hexagon; this is different from the K10D (and K100D) where I need a split prism screen.

Another thing the K5 screens could FF or BF compared to autofocus. My FF, to fix it you have to change shims. I had to put a thinner shim in mine to get it to focus correctly while manually focusing.
