Resurrecting this thread:

This very same problem just happened with my "dependable" K5, just short of one week before a dream vacation!!

It is going to Pentax Canada tomorrow morning.
Lucky for me this camera is still under warranty.

I will report the "results" once the gear is back,

JP

Had the same battery depleted message after fitting new lithium batteries. Nothing worked at all, as the proverbial Dodo. Emery cloth on the battery ends, nil result. Very gently probed the interior battery terminals with a lead pencil, drawing on each of the four terminals with the pencil point. Replaced the new batteries, worked a treat. Camera now ready to capture antics of garden visiting birdlife, and more importantly the Fairford Air Tattoo next week.

The K5 is back from Pentax Canada

So, I just received the camera today, after almost two weeks waiting.
Not bad I suppose, considering the time for shipping back and forth.

Anyway, here is a rundown of what has been done:

1. cover plate double stick (x3) ... no idea what that is, probably some tape of some sort.
2. Mirror motor assembly ... motor replaced; mirror mechanism repaired.
3. release SW ... no idea what that is either.
4. digital miscellaneous ... whatever they did to the software?
5. cleaned and adjusted.
6. BO FPC ... I am just hoping this is not a "Back Order" item which was not taken care of !

Now the camera seems to be just very smooth in operation; I hadn't noticed that the noise was slowly increasing when taking a shot. Now it is VERY soft and quiet.
The AF seems to be much snappier and precise. (with the DA*300/4 tests I did today).

Let's get going and hope this is it for repairs ... crossed fingers.

Thanks for following up with the results - here's hoping that it is good to go now.

Stan:

It looks OK from the pics I took this afternoon: fra, then further away, close, sloser, ... all very sharp and detailed.

One thing I forgot to mention: I had to go through the whole process of setting up the camera, just as if it were a brand new one right out of the box, but I checked the shutter count: 23K ... no deal on that!

I'll report back again at least one more time as I am going out this weekeend to take some shots at my favorite(s) spot(s).
