K5 iso 80

One word, WHOA! so much DR in this camera....
I just used K5 for a week coming from K10D and KX it is ridiculous how easy it is to work with ISO80 RAW from K5!!!
Not to mention how great it is for slow shutter shots

On a side note to anyone doubting fa31mm sharpness:

Wow, awesome scene..that DR is impressive, it looks like an HDR composite but so much more natural.

Thank you, I was really surprised as well of what K5 can do....there are so much detail in the shadow
What impressed me the most is how much improvement there is from K-X....I've taken the same shot from same spot many times before and kx doesnt even come close to k5's ability.

I didn't do much editing on the image, I switched the WB to tungsten and played around with the brightness / contrast to make the sky pop a bit more.

Oh sorry, I didn't even look. I was so taken in by your photo! Thanks for sharing! You should have included a 100% crop of the office buildings. I'd be super impressed if you caught someone working late at night.

I shoot everything at the lowest ISO possible, and before getting the K5, I figured the expanded 80 ISO was something of a gimic. Not so. Even though we are only talking 20 points lower than 100, I've seen a considerable improvement in IQ at ISO 80. I don't know why the range has to be "expanded" to get it, or whether it is a "software thing" or not--but I sure like it.
However, this camera also takes the best clowdy and low-light images of any camera I've own at 400 and even 800 ISO.

Yup it's a fine sensor all right, I just hope that it will keep on getting better in future models.

It has to be expanded as per specifications - the [100-12800] is where ISO performance is at its best for the sensor as per lab test's.

Not sure how much DR you'll see in an 8bit jpeg... it certainly creates fine long exposure images.

Now, take a low light image with the K5 and drop the shutter by two, three or even more stops.
You'll obviously get a very dark, even near black image... normally you'd toss it as a failure.
Now push the exposure up in your RAW software. You just might find the image more than useable but actually acceptable.

THAT will show how much DR the camera has. :-) Its amazing how much you can pull up the darks.
I tend to be somewhat disappointed in how little highlights can be brought back. I will under expose my shots just a bit if questionable to keep the highlights from blowing out because I know I can easily bring back the shadows.
Its a nice camera.
