New K-5 user.

I'm shooting my daughter's soccer game tonight.

What ISO setting should I use and, what do I give up (if anything) by pussing the ISO setting higher.

Also, what mode should I be using?

Any other information that would be useful would greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Outdoors at night means poor lighting usually. Higher ISO results in more noise (grainer images). For sports action you want to focus on shutter speed primarily IMO - and want it to be 1/250th or higher with 1/1000th more useable in my experience. There are more experienced soccer shooters here but that's what I try for with my son's soccer games (U10).

Also, the more you can position yourself and anticipate the action the more likely you are to have a great shot. Add in a Monopod and you might just have some really good shots.

Best of luck

TAv mode is a good mode to use in that situation if you're comfortable with knowing the best aperture and shutter speeds to use with your lenses and under those lighting conditions. A shutter speed appropriate to reasonably freeze action and sufficient depth of field with the appropriate aperture will do you well for most of the shoot.

Do some test shots before your daughter performs to help you decide. I have used all the way up tp 12800 on the K5 with amazing results.
A mediocre shot would be better than no shot at all? I know, not a purist answer, instead somewhat pragmatic.

I agree. My k-10D struggled in low light with action shots. Virtually EVERYTHING I took was blurry.

I have high hopes for the K-5.

My initial high ISO shots with the K5 have been outstanding. The noise at 12800 is less than the K10D has at 800. I've only had it a week so my experience is limited but I can't wait to take it to a hockey game.

I'll second on "Use TAv." Letting the K5 pick the ISO to go with your shutter (prob 1/250) and aperture (prob wide open) will give the best shots overall. For hi ISO (above about 1600) you will need to use noise reduction--in camera if you shoot jpg, in post processing if you shoot raw. I've had my K5 for a couple of months and am still amazed at its high ISO performance. The TAv is a magic setting for low light.

Thanks.

So, set the camera to TAv, go with 1/250th shutter speed and f2.8 for the lens and the camera picks the ISO! Cool.

Thank you!

You might want to bump that up to something higher, especially if the action is fast moving. And (especially) if you are using a lens 200mm or greater. Start from 1/500 and see how you go Better a bit of high-ISO noise grain than a shot that is all fuzzy due to subject or camera motion blur.

I dont have my K5 yet, but I would also second the use of TAv for the above reasons. The advantage for me was that I could stop down (usually f/4) to give me a little more depth of field. I found at f/2.8 that I missed focus with fast moving action.

I know this game is over... but for the next one, don't forget burst mode.

Some turned out good, some were grainy. How do I post images?
