I'm starting to use M mode more than TAv mode now, especially in poor, but consistantly poor (as in not changing), light. All it takes is a few test shots and chimping the histogram, and then you are set for the night. PP is much easier, and the results are better. TAv still has the problem of the camera varying the exposure shot to shot.

In inconsitent light of any sort, I still like TAv.

Grainy is better than out of focus or blurred. :-)
Do you know what ISO the camera chose? ISO 10,000 is often acceptable.

Regardless, you will almost certainly need to obtain some sort of de-noise software.
But with the K5, the software will be able to do an outstanding job with reducing noise compared to what you might achieve with, lets say, even the K7!

If you are not shooting RAW, you may also find noise reduction software can squeak out better results from RAW than from JPEG... especially if white balance or exposure needs any adjustment.

I understand ISO.
as well as the how field of focus works with changing the aperture.
I started many moons a go with a Canon AE-1. I could make that camera jump through hoops. Unfortunately, that camera was stolen when my home was burglarized. The insurance company replace it with an Canon EOS Elan. Unfortunately that camera was stolen out of my car and it didn't make the threshold to file a claim.
I went to a point and shoot digital and learned to photoshop. Then, I bought a Pentax KI10D about 5 years ago. About 2 months ago, after 30,000 shots, the mirror stuck in the up position. About a week ago, I bought the K-5.

Good shots, excellent timing on many to get the feeling of action. The K5 certainly worked out well at the ISO levels needed?

Easy, click on the paper-clip symbol( attachments) then browse you files and "up-load", do mind the max. file size.

Give me your thoughts. I'm still learning to use this camera. The mode was TAv. These images were shot at f3.5 1/400th and with the upper limit of the ISO set at 3200. So, I had to go lighten them up. I have since figured out how to move the upper limit ISO to 12,800.

Nice action shots despite the poor lighting conditions.

Explains the amount of noise. Try Topaz De-noise, works good with JPEG`s and even better with RAW files.
I let ISO go to 8000 in TAv mode. Beyond that things get noisy and be better off shooting RAW. Kinda kills the fast burst AFC fun how ever.

OK. How do I use Topaz de-noise?

Something I down load to the camera? Or, is that a program for the computer?

It is a photoshop plugin. Second best 80 bucks I spent in a long time.

Yes, Tav...it is the most used setting on my K5. It takes the guesswork out of the ISO......you pick the speed needed and whatever the ISO needed is....it is.....(set the range you want) you don't have to guess or worry that you could have done better...as long as you have the correct speed you need. I use it on wildlife and Squirrels...but I can't talk about that here!

Regards & Good Luck!

Yes, it does a good job. Here is something else that might be of interest. This is my favorite program for correcting focus errors and motion-blur (within reason). It is a standalone but also works as a PS plug-in.
Recover Detail and Sharpen Your Blurred Photos
You can download it and try it free for 10 images. If you decide to get it, the e-mail with the authorization code takes a day or two to get.
