Need a quick answer to this. Pentax Asahi Takumar

Will this lens : Pentax Asahi Takumar 500mm f4

Work with the k5 mount?

I'm not sure what an m42 mount is either.

m42 is a screw-mount, and it will not work without an adapter. With an adapter (get the Pentax genuine one, not a cheap knockoff), it will work but only in manual mode -- no auto-aperture, no auto-focus.

M42 is an older mount used by Pentax and others. It is a physical mount only, no electrical contact. It was superseded by the k mount in 1975. It can be used on k mount cameras such as the k-5 with an adapter. It will be manual focus, manual aperture and you will need to use the green button stop down metering. I am not aware that there was ever an f/4 variant of this lens, f/4.5 is the fastest I know of and then also an f/5 version.

Takumar's are great lenses (except for the few that came in a K mount). Checkout the Takumar Club if you haven't already.

Amazingly there are currently 5 of these for sale on ebay at the moment. That just seems to be an unlikely number of a fairly rare lens to be on sale all at once.

And the one marketed as a Nikon lens is $1999, which is about $1000 more than the next most expensive Takumar 500 listed right now

It will meter at whatever f stop you have the aperture ring set to. If you want a smaller aperture you can open the lens, focus, then step down by turning the aperture ring, then shutter release. The adapters are a simple ring that fits in the bayonet mount and has a female 42mm thread. Make sure you get a good one, some are too thick and prevent focussing to infinity.

Depending on what you use it for, it may be preferable to the K mount. The K mount requires the green button metering. The M42 meters in real time to the aperture setting.

Here's how it's done:
https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-lens-articles/110657-how-use-meter...k-x-k-7-a.html

Since it's a screwmount, you can even use them in Av mode, which is sort of convenient.
