K-5 movie length

Dear all,

I read so far, that I can record movies up to a length of 25 minutes.
But if I start the recording, then the remaining time is only 8 minutes and a few seconds.
(I have set it to HD/30)

If I set ist to other resolutions or frame rates it is also never about 25 minutes...

What I'm doing wrong...?

thx in advance and
Best regards,
njuBee

Do you have a small SD card? A 25-minute file count end up being quite large.

Dear anvh,

The current card (16gb) is a transcend class 6.

I've just tested it again with a 8gb sandisk class 4 (15 mb/s) - with the same behaviour/results

That is a bit weird, class 4 means 4MB/s, class 6 means 6MB/s so why would anyone making a card that handles 15MB/s call it class 4?

Hi,

I've no Idea...
sandisk has a lot of "class [someclass]" cards with higher rates....

Haha that's Sandisk for you.
Their extreme cards that are labelled class 6 also do 20+MB/s

But the card is fast enough for HD-video.
No idea why it's so short with you.
But how often would you need to record longer than 8 minute, just watch an movie and you see that a camera shot don't last longer then maybe 2 minute.

Hi Anvh,

Just the 1st time I had to record a movie with the k-5 ;-)

We have a famous zoo here in Saxony (Leipziger Zoo).
They have a new attraction there - the "Gondwanaland",
where you can have a boat trip inside the hall wich takes about 12 minutes...

(only one litte example, I could tell more)

Best regards,

Turns out I have the same "problem". I think it's filesize related. What you can do is turning down the quality from three stars to two stars, that gave me about 13 minutes at HD/30.

Hi Gimbal,

Decreasing the quality gives me longer recording time too.
Thank u 4 that hint.

But the funny point is, that the display shows me a very longer video capacity,
BEFORE I start the recording....

The "higher" speed is the reading speed not write speed. Very misleading. They wanna make it better than it is :/

same for me
if I record 1080p..I can only record 5 min at one time
if I record 720p..I can record 8 min at one time
if I record VGA..I can record 25min at one time
this is kind limited...I remember 5d mark II can record 1080p for 12 min at one time...still a lot better than 5 min from k-5...

K-5 not the best for video. Panasonic GH2 can do 90+ minutes at 1080P. Camera has very good heat management.

Dear all,

Thank u all 4 ur replies!

It looks like, that I have to live with that limit.
Setting the quality to medium might be the compromise ...
