Flash sync at 1/45, how to change?

The pop-up flash, and an external Metz, both sync to 1/45 in Av mode. How do I make it sync at 180 (or anything else) in Av mode?

Unless you are trying to capture ambient light, there is no need to use use Av mode. Just switch to X-mode and the speed will be 1/180.

In Av mode the camera sets the shutter speed matching ambient light. If you want to control the shutter speed you should use Tv, M, TAv or X.

Demp, thanks for the reminder. That's what I needed. Its rare that I shoot with flash, and I knew there was an easy solution.

Also when using flash? My experience is that it chooses a speed based on the focal length. It seems very conservative with a rule of 2x focal length; for a FA31Ltd it's 1/60s and for a DFA100WR it's 1/180s; with the kit lens, it's variable depending on focal length and I'm not sure about the chosen speed (I think something like 1/30s to 1/90s).

sterretje, you are correct. In Av mode it chooses the sync speed based on lens focal length. I was using my DA21 when I asked the original question. When I use the DA70, flash sync is set to 125. Since I don't normally use flash with a wide-angle, it was odd (to me) seeing the 1/45 speed.
