K-r as backup

Im going to Africa next summer. Love my new k-5 but for a 20k safari, wanted a backup body. Please tell me a new k-r was a good choice.

Excellent choice. Great ISO range, solid AF, very nice camera. The only problems folks have reported is under tungsten light and I'm guessing you will not be dealing much with that on Safari. Now, how are you fixed for water resistant lenses for the K5?

A solid backup would be a K-7. With the same dials and buttons as the K-5, the K-7 would be very convenient to use as K-5's backup and still be WR.

Food for thoughts.....

I can get a used K-7 but 100 bucks more than a new Kr. I have several WR lens including the DA* 300mm f4. The reviews seemed to suggest that the Kr had a bit better DR, but I will have to learn the "dials" and all I suppose. Considering I traded up from an *istD and never even read that manual, I am comfortable with the K-5 after a few weeks.

The similarity of controls and usable accessories is a good case to go with the K-7 but image quality wise, but the K-r's sensor does better the K-7's sensor.
