maximum useful SD card speed

Does anyone know what the maximum writing speed to SD card is for the K5? There are all these extremely expensive high speed cards on the market, but I suspect there is a speed beyond which the K5 becomes the limiting factor.

The SanDisk Extreme III cards with their 30mbs (Class 10) appear to be at the max end of the K-5's abilities based on a variety of posts here and elsewhere that I have read.

I use both SanDisk Extreme II (30mbs) and SanDisk Extreme Pro (45mbs) and have not been able to see any difference. I have invested in the Extreme Pro as a way of future proofing my card arsenal but I doubt the K-5 can do them justice. They are faster in my card reader but not dramatically so. All of that is observation, not based on any actual testing.

Well, that sorts that out. I'll be buying extra sandisk 30 Mb/s cards, no point in spending more on faster cards. Thanks for the replies!

It might not speed up the camera at the moment but it does speed up uploading you photos to the computer though.

The reviews I have seen on that indicate that it only really shows up if you are using a USB 3.0 reader, and then its rather dramatic.

Yes, but that is not something I would pay extra for. Waiting time between shots is something else though...

Thats why cameras have a buffer (ram), unless you shoot a lot of photos after eachother i doubt you will notice a difference because the buffer in the K5 is quite large.

If this is the last body you'll purchase, then the Extreme III are fine. I have a handful of them. If you think that your next body will be faster and/or USB 3.0 is in your immediate future, you may want to re-evaluate your decision.

This thread seems to indicate an advantage to the extreme pro card with the K5

Difficult to tell as there are no numbers involved, was done on 1set of equipment, and for the write to disk process apparently used subjective perception of the owner. Its also hard to credit on the write to disk side as the Extreme III cards actually exceed the K5's ability to write.

Why would you need more equipment.
It shows it can go up to 146 MB/s tranfer speed so it won't limit the non UHS cards in anyway.

While not faster in our K-5 it will speed up used in your PC when you install a USB 3.0 port and purchase a USB 3.0 cardreader.

This is just a test with 32 GB SanDisk PRO card

You need an empty PCI slot in your PC and the costs are low.

The K-5 just can't write that fast. As for other equipment, sorry but replication and reliability of findings is something that is essential to eliminate random issues and errors of findings. Basic methodology here is important. While the report referred to is a nice anecdote it is not particularly meaningful. Analysis that looks at multiple cards across multiple devices with objective measures are more useful and are the ones that I will rely on in making my decisions. They indicate that the bottom line is that the only possible benefit from a Pro card at 45MB/s is on the removing the data from the card IF you have a USB 3.0 reader (which I do have) but NOT on the in the camera side of the equation with the K5, K-r, or K-x.
