Capturing refracted light from water droplets

I was going through the year's photos, picking out some of the better ones. I started the year using an Oly E420 and got my K5 in September.

Last spring I came across a scene that I wanted to capture but wasn't able to. The evergreens were wet with large water droplets, I think an early morning spring rain, and the sun was shining through them. The trees sparkled with green, red and blue lights. The photos showed none of the color, the only thing that was anywhere close was some white blotches in out of focus areas.

How would one go about capturing that? I could see the color through the viewfinder, but the photos didn't do justice to the amazing scene. Some showed red dots, but nothing like the sparkle of the scene.

If I had to guess the sun reflections would be blown out, making all the colors you saw appear white (it sounds like it was backlighted?) Should be easy to check on the photo?

No expert, but maybe significantly underexposing would get you the colors/lights, and if the rest of the scene is too dark, maybe use HDR?
