Here is one more from Willie's concert last night.. had to get a bit closer for this one. Willie has a tendency to look down while he plays and he also closes his eyes a lot... lucky to get this one.
That is an AWESOME shot!

Just to learn about concert photography, do you use spot metering in a situation like that?

Once again a great portrait shot of Willie Jim.
It's good to have some friends on the inside of Billy Bob's.

Metering....

I just answered this question in another forum so I am going to cut and paste what I said there

Metering was done with the Mark I eyeball. I took a couple of test shots to see what was too much and what was too little and found the sweet spot of f/4 at about 1/150 to 1/250.

I have found that trying to meter for concerts with rapidly changing lighting is next to impossible. Even using spot metering it does not always come out the way I desire so I manually control the shutter and aperture. I had the camera set to Manaul mode. Aperture was set to f/4 and ISO was set on auto with an upper limit of 1600. I juggled the shutter speed up and down depending on the lighting level. It just worked better for me. I thought the TaV mode would work as well but for some reason it didn't perform as well as I expected it to.

I did the same thing with my Canon 5D II... I always end up setting the aperture and juggling shutter speed to get what I want.

He doesn't move too fast, does he? Was his record label photographer there as well? Probably not, as there are a million photographs already taken of him.

I was in radio for over 40 years and never once have I seen a record label photographer at a concert and that is across all genres of music from country to rock and pop.

With Willie every photo could be the last one, same goes for BB King and a number of other August entertainers.

Wow!

I don't enter the K5 forum often (as I don't have one) but those shots are both fantastic!

My car is a bit of a shed... I don't have an MP3 player or CD player in it... I do have a really old stereo though, and it plays a form of media called a 'cassette'... Anyway I only have 3 'cassettes' and 2 of them are Willie!! LEGEND!!!
