I just answered this question in another forum so I am going to cut and paste what I said there
Metering was done with the Mark I eyeball. I took a couple of test shots to see what was too much and what was too little and found the sweet spot of f/4 at about 1/150 to 1/250.
I have found that trying to meter for concerts with rapidly changing lighting is next to impossible. Even using spot metering it does not always come out the way I desire so I manually control the shutter and aperture. I had the camera set to Manaul mode. Aperture was set to f/4 and ISO was set on auto with an upper limit of 1600. I juggled the shutter speed up and down depending on the lighting level. It just worked better for me. I thought the TaV mode would work as well but for some reason it didn't perform as well as I expected it to.
I did the same thing with my Canon 5D II... I always end up setting the aperture and juggling shutter speed to get what I want.
