Take the lens off, put on the mount cap.
Turn camera on.

The contacts don't need to be shortened. Usually the M42's don't do it, and they are as manual as can be.

I'll try that later. I don't have the cap with me at this time.

I've just emailed Pentax UK to get their response but they haven't been too quick to answer in the past.

So...?

So you have your camera off, change the lens, turn the camera on, get no prompt to input the focal length of the lens, right?

When you then go to the menu item for inputting focal length, what is it set on? Is it set to the last length you inputted, the length of the lens that you attached, or something else?

I have several KA lenses, plus a couple of M lenses. I always get a prompt? Let us know what you hear from Pentax.

Not sure...

I am not sure what causes that, but I have had the same experience a handful of times. I do think that it is settings/sequencing issue because I seem to recall that I if I shut the camera off and remounted the lens I would be prompted for FL again. Let us know what you find out.

Seems you do have a problem, as every M lens I have mounted prompts for FL when I turn the camera on.

The only other thing I can think of is if you are in a mode where SR is turned off automatically. Bulb mode for example.

I've tried it on permitted and prohibited.

I think I've tried about every combination on the camera now.

Did you try to do a custom function reset?

Does the hand icon show up in the viewfinder to indicate SR is on?

Do you have a grip with a button pushed or a cable release attached and switched on ?
Something is preventing you to enter the focal length... A pushed button perhaps.

Always promtped using variety lens ...

Bonjour,

I always get the prompt immediately ... whether using my Pentax M's (75-150, 200, 50) or A50.

Same is true with my Adaptall-2's (no difference for a PKM or PKA mount), old Sigma mirror and MF Cosina's.

I never use the menu function route ... even when changing the FL for a manual zoom (like the M 75-150 or a Tamron) ... just turn off and back on and select desired FL ... sometimes shooting at the lowest FL of the zoom or switching up to the highest ... and sometimes just splitting the middle of the range and not changing at all.

Hope you find a solution. There have a lot of good suggestions ... keep us posted ... Merci.

Allez, courage - J Frog

No. Doesn't happen.

I never change the lens with the camera switched on.

At the moment the F.L. is set to 200mm. Focus mode to manual and mode dial to M. I just tried my 20mm, 28mm, 50mm and 100mm. No prompt when I switched back on.

I set the dial to TAV and focus to AFS and nothing and then I tried all manual settings again. Still no prompt.
I don't have a K-5 yet. Does this problem have something to do with TAV? Does the camera prompt for a focal length when in manual mode?
