..or should I be worried? Has anyone else taken similar picture? It happened only once and all the pictures before and after this incident are OK. It would be nice to know what caused this and how often it happens.

K5 + 100mm macro WR
AF.S, continous shooting (hi)

My first guess would be a "corrupt" SD-card.
Make sure you always format your SD-card in the camera, not on the computer.

I always format SD cards in camera

and I have not tried other card because it seems to work.

Has it just happened onece, or is it consistent? If it just happened once it could be a write error, perhaps the SD card controller on the card encountered a bad sector and didn't recover correctly.

I had an SD card that did that (used in a Pentax K200D), but it was always in just one image, I would get home, download a full SD card's worth of images and there was always one image damaged. I replaced the SD card and never had any issues again.

In addition to the comments about corrupted SD cards, was the camera running low on battery power and shutdown after shooting the image? I've seen strange things happen on my customers' P&S cameras because the camera is turning itself off due to low battery power, but the customer keeps turning the camera back on and shooting more images. If the camera shuts down while trying to save the data to the card from the buffer it can corrupt the data. I've seen this mostly with Canons and a few others, and it has even rendered a card unusable until the data can be recovered with software.

This has been dogging me since I bought my K5. I'm pretty sure it's my card reader, but I've been to lazy to actually go out and buy another one.

Join in "probably the card" chorus. Similar thing happened to me long ago when card died, all last photos it succeeded to save had very similar patterns. And i had then Sony point and shoot camera.

Are you shooting in DNG, PEF, or DNG mode? DNG usually contains an embedded JPG preview thumbnail. Try to check whether the DNG or the preview portion is bad. We'll need to know what processing software you use if you need help doing that.

Do you see the same problem if you review the bad photo on your camera's LCD?

If you already deleted the bad photo from your card you might not be able to answer the above questions. Just format the card in-camera and if the problem happens again set that card aside as potentially bad. If the problem continues with a different card then there might be something going on with your camera, card reader, computer, or processing software.

(Something similar happened with 1 photo the first weekend I bought my Canon S95. I took many photos afterwards within the return period but the problem never showed up again. I'm still using the same camera and memory card one year later with no issues.)

Same problem here, faulty card. Camera kept freezing. After a while the card died right after I managed to transfer the files to my laptop. Replaced faulty card with new one, no problems since.

Experienced something similar and discovered that the card reader built into my laptop was defective. A USB plug-in reader fixed the problem.
