K-5 Dust Removal function

Hi all,

Finally upgraded my old trusted K-x to K-5 yesterday. As I was going through all the menus and making sure my new camera is functioning last night, I tested out the dust removal function on my K-5. With the K-x, doing so would cause the whole camera to shake. However, with the K-5 I only heard a slight humming noise. Just wondering if that is normal? I know they are supposed to be different; I'm just not sure if this is how it behaves.

Thanks!

Mine doesn't make a humming noise at all, just super quiet. Either yours is broken or mine is :P

Humming noise is probably not the right description for it. It sounds kind of like air flowing through a tube, like someone squeezed an air blower. It's so quiet that I can't tell if it's really working!

That sounds about right. Hard to hear it doing anything.

Instead of shaking it off they now vibrate the dust off the filter.

Mine is silent as well. Also, largely ineffective.

I just did a search wondering about the same thing. This function on my K20D was very loud, causing the whole camera to vibrate. I canīt hear or feel a thing on my K5. Looks like itīs normal, though, according to the number of posters attesting to the same?

In case you can hear it, it should sound like a mosquito, just a short burst of it.

I also initially wondered about whether dust removal was working on the K-5 at all, it is so quiet. Pentax says the K-5 uses a piezo-ceramic element to vibrate the low-pass filter on the sensor ultrasonically ('Pentax DR II system', same as on the K-7 and 645D) to do dust removal. The K-x shakes the sensor mechanically, using the SR mechanism for dust removal, and you can't help but notice it.

The jury is still out (for me) as to which works best.

I often wonders if it works too I've had some dust in mine and after a whole lot of spamming the dust removal function it didn't go away. In the end I just used a blower and that got rid of it. I've tried a k-r at a store and used it's dust removal function and it shakes violently, the k-r's vibration is more confidence inspiring.

I was searching for this thinking my K-5 dust removal function was broken as I neither heard or felt anything.
Only when I put my ear against the back lcd I hear something like a mouse squeak - very faint.

I suppose it works. Now I am off to clean ear smudge off of my brand new K-5 :-P

Argun
PS: next I will be searching for threads to see if my SR is broken, as I neither feel or hear anything from that either, and I haven't perfected the ear to the viewfinder shooting technique yet

For the K5 they have switched to a high pitch sound to remove the dust in stead of the old shaking process.
However everybody knows that when you get older you wont be able to hear those high frequency sounds anymore. So if you're over 50 and hear nothing there's nothing to worry about. If you're in the twenties and you here nothing then there is something wrong with your camera or possibly with your ears.
