It's a little over 74,000yen on Amazon Japan right now.
That's about 50k cheaper than it's original price.

It's always the way with electronics: buy early and pay high or wait until the price drops. The choice is yours.
Nothing unusual.

Price drops in France ... K-5 & lenses

Bonjour,

Thanks to the price drop(s) in France, I upgraded away from my "troublesome" pre-owned K-7. I bought a K-5 ensemble with a DA 18-55 WR, 4 year warranty and Pentax camera bag ... plus I took advantage of the 100 Euro "X-mas season" rebate program and add to that a 50 Euro in-store instant rebate sent to me by Pentax Europe. Thus, all the above for a very reasonable amount after selling the aforementioned K-7.

I have been watching the prices vey closely in France, and they have not been dropping rock, but have been relatively progressive and greater reductions over the past few months since the Ricoh purchase, but of course the K-5 was about at its first year anniversary then.

Pentax lenses have also slightly reduced in their purchase prices, i.e. the 40 Limited and/or FA 50 1.4 that I have eyeing for a while via my "best-cost" camera dealer internet site ... about a 30 to 40 Euro drop, which runs between 8 to 12% (rough figures) as per traditional prices over the previous 12 months. The DA 55-300 went up to price for a while and now has dropped 30 Euros below its price a year ago and the D FA 100 WR has also dropped about 30 Euros, too. Oddly enough, the DA 50-200 WR has increased in price by 30-40 Euros ... go figure.

So, it's obvious that I am very price concious (read stingy), but I would estimate that maybe these seemingly across the board price reductions may be to "push" the products better ... and I am all for it!

EDIT : It also seems to have been some minor price drops for Pentax OEM grips, flashes, (not batteries), etc. ... just double checked and I have noticed a few ( less maybe -10, -20 Euros or so ... ).

Voilą ... "FYI" for what it's worth ... Allez, Salut - J Frog

I got lucky. I bought my K-5 "used" (only 35 actuations and never registered) for $922.

Regardless of the price I am just about to buy my second K5. Shooting live music in tandem with my K10D the difference is like chalk and cheese.

I have never seen a legitimate dealer selling a K-5 for $879. Pointless thread unless a source can be cited.

In general, if you wait, the price of electronics does come down. I bought my first K5 at 1200 dollars, second one at 1039 5 months later. At the same time, I wouldn't have waited for the pleasure of owning the camera. In a couple of years, you'll be able to buy used ones on the forum for 400 to 450, but you will have missed out on two years of shooting with a great camera.

I hope it's doing well for you. Sounds like the original owner got scared by all the stories. At 35 shutter clicks and unregistered that might be worth the chance but for the most part I would not take a risk on a used K5. Too afraid of buying someone else's problems. I bought 2 new K5s so I only have my own. I wonder if at some point factory refurbs are going to become available.

Its about $938 here (Singapore).

I don't lament the price drop.
I welcome it.
It means more people will be able to gt this camera and Pentax stays viable.
That equals more good stuff for ME in the future and ensures my collection of lenses stay relevant.
Anyone buying electronics gear early knows full well that there will be a premium paid for being the latest.

The photos I've been able to take from purchase till the price drop, is priceless.

Happy As Hell

I purchased my K5 from Prodigital as an "Open Box" for $799.00 free shipping. I know how lucky I was. I would have paid more if I hadn't fallen on the deal. I love my K5 and it is more of a camera than I can handle, but I am learning new things every day. It is a great camera to grow with. I swore I would keep using my K10 but it is proving difficult.........

In economics this is called price skimming. It's the normal strategy for electronic devices. For any new product, the early adopters will always pay a premium, and the company uses this to its advantage. That way if the product is a failure, they still make a profit. Once the product has been out a while, most companies switch to a penetration pricing strategy, where the price (and profit margin) are lowered to gain market share, and to appeal to the majority market.

And I bought mine 2 weeks before Cyber Monday at $1199, and don't regret it for a second. It was worth every penny.

Well I payed 945 euro (we had a group purchase and cash-back) at the start in 2010. I see now that the cheapest vendor I trust is at 749 euro (it was down to 669 euro with cashback by the end of 2011). So for us (I think we where with 35 at the start for this deal) we had a great price and now already 15 months of use of the camera.

cheapest legitimate dealer i've seen is 949 CDN (body Only) and it was 1499 (body only) at launch (but not for long, it settled down a couple of hundred rapidly)
i's been on the market since November 2010 so 15 months. It will be replaced this fall.so it's well past th halfway point in it's life. If it hadn't dropped i'd be more surprised myself. this is actually the best value time to buy the last third o life is always good value. but 15 months of ownership for $550 seems pretty reasonable to me (36.67/month - a 4 day rental of a K5 is $100 at cameralensrentals.com

This is a few times in this thread. Like people really think that their camera doesn't go down in value. I sold one of my K-5's in october to replace it with a new one. My selling price was with 550 euro (this was just before the pricedrop and cashback announcement) very good. In the end I just had to pay 140 euro to upgrade to a new K-5 body. This was for making 55.000 pictures, so a good deal.

cheap at twice the price

Realistically the people who lose the least value are the ones who buy at the end of a life cycle. a big chunk of the value holds until the next model reaches it's end of life. theoretically the person who buys a K5 today at 999 say (the cheapest i've seen) will still recover about 6-700 of that in 2 years when the next model hits end of life and then they can upgrade for maybe $4-500 total at that point - say $480 for ease - $20 a month
Wait another 2 years and go on a 4 year cycle and sell 999 camera for 350 and the cost of use drops further (13.52/month - the cost of 1 roll of good slide film processed a month - for as many pictures as you want to take)
not a bad deal. Film cameras cost me more than that to own - just on vacation alone i would shoot 36-50 rolls of film.

I bought mine from AJ Richies (pretty good dealer IMO) for $879 (body only). They also have the lowest prices I can find for Pentax lenses, although not the best selection.
Are you sure that was new and not refurbished? I have seen some refurbished selling in that price range.
