Well I did jump into K-7 and K-5 at the start and looked for someone to overpay for my old camera. The trick is to find a fool who pays to much. I sold my K-7 and added 370 euro to replace it with K-5 (to have two K-5's). I used the K-7 from end july 2009 until end december 2010.

My K7 lightly used cost me less than half the K5 when it released - 15 months ago. I still see people on CL and elsewhere trying to fob of K7 for way more than I paid which think is nuts (some local idiot has it priced at $1100 with a DA21. nice kit but i think at least $200-300 to high myself (I would still rather have my K7 with a DA 21 than a k-01 with a 40xs if it was to be my only camera. )

I wrote an article about it almost a year ago.

In Dutch, but with funny translate:
Google Vertaling

So I started out in januari 2009 with K20D wich I replaced in juli 2009 for K-7 wich
  • K20D bought 01-2009 for 840 euro (incl grip) and sold in 06-2009 for 650 euro.
  • K-7 bought in 07-2009 for 1149 euro and sold in 12-2010 for 575 euro.
  • K-5 bought in 11-2010 for 945 euro and returned for stains in 12-2010 -> K-5 Silver
  • K-5 bought in 12-2010 for 945 euro and sold in 10-2011 for 550 euro.
  • K-5 Silver bought in 04-2011 as replacement for the stains body and added 234 euro.
  • K-5 bought in 10-2011 for 699 euro.

So in total I spend 3037 euro on camerabody's. I still own K-5 and K-5 Silver that are both around 50k on the shutter (so half true their lifetime). If I just count the months of camera ownership I come to 49 months (currently two body's so that adds up twice as fast). If my both K-5's have to go true the hole year 2012 (if replacement will come at the end of the year) then they are both at the end of their life. Having 69 months of ownership and nothing to sell anymore. Costing 44 euro for each camera to use for a month.

Hmm, thanks for the heads up. I'll be sure to be careful with them. They did try to upsell, but I just say no to upsells. Other than that, no problems (so far).
Many have reported, on various sites, that if they said no to upsells they did not receive the item or that it arrived minus critical parts that are normally included in the box like battery or charger. Another tactic is to sell items intended for sale elsewhere - PAL compatible not NTSC for example - and not those intended for the US or NA.

this is classic there have been more than a few dealers doing stuff like that - some were even authorized dealers. Way back (the 80's) i remember seeing adds for video cameras that I sold for $2500 in an ad for $1900. when you investigated you found out about the needed starter kit for $600 (adapter/charger battery manual etc which at the time were conveniently packed in a smaller box inside the bigger camcorder box lol)
the fact that it still happens 30 years later show the truth in PT Barnum's there's a sucker born every minute.

As an early adopter, I paid the full price (and that's somewhere between US$1700 and US$2000 converted from local currency, can't remember the exchange rate at that time). Bloody expensive but I haven't regretted it for a second.

I got mine for 949 CAD(About 900 USD at the time) back in December. Was the body only, but still *COULD NOT* find it cheaper anywhere else(Was glad to see that for once, it was cheaper to buy from a local Canadian business). From a local camera shop as well(Where I planned on buying it to begin with, as long as the price didn't deviate more than 10%). Well worth the investment.

Not all places are scams, but I would indeed be wary of the online sellers with sub $1000 pricing.

Also, as mentioned previously, the pricing on Bodies drops like a ship from heaven. However, as with any market, there are always those willing to buy it off you(Bought my Nikon D5100 for $750 with the kit lens when it was on special at Black's[Not where I bought my K-5 From, they wanted $1600 there, as it wasn't a stock item], after 5 months total, I was able to resell it for $800[50$ less than the normal price]) at a premium, it's just a matter of making it appear unused. You're not doing anything wrong really, as long as the product works as intended, if someone pays a little more than it's worth, so be it. If they're willing to pay that, they probably won't notice the difference, and both of you got what you wanted.(I run into this a lot when talking to friends of mine involved with the constant swapping/selling of paintball markers, they'll basically generate 750$ just to end up with a marker equivalent to their old one in a matter of 6 months and 15 markers later)

TL;DR - Don't be surprised. Prices go down, but you can still recoup a generous amount from your old bodies.

I am not complaining because I brought my K-5 from someone who used it as a second back-up body with only 5000 clicks for $700. If I had not come across that opportunity, I think I still would have paid the full price for it, it should be worth every penny.

Are you sure that was new and not refurbished? I have seen some refurbished selling in that price range.
Yup, brand new in box with all normal case candy. I also had a problem with the memory card that they sold me (common "memory card error" that can be researched on this forum) and I got a replacement free of charge in less than one week from the day that I mailed the bad one to them.

I know that I may be in the minority, but I've had nothing but problems with B&H (backorderd items that were listed as "in stock," shipping issues, etc), but AJ Richie's has been awesome, JMHO.

I paid $1300 to Adorama in Early Feb. and a few weeks later Pentax dropped the price temporarily to about $1100. Yes it was annoying but that's the way it goes - at the time I bought it camera prices were going up almost every day so I decided not to wait any longer.

Most of the very low price K-5s you see in the U.S. are gray market stuff with no U.S. warranty. With the K-5's slightly tarnished rep for QC I thought a real warranty was worth the extra - plus you never know if the gray market stuff is actually a returned unit or refurbished. And the Pentax extended warranty that gives you two more years for $20 is a steal - I almost never get an extended warranty because they are too expensive.

I suspect Pentax is dropping the price to allow retailers to get rid of stock, because SOMETHING NEW is coming....
