After 12 months: I'm still delighted with the K5

There;s all this activity on the PF to find the next best camera, e.g. is the K01 good enough without the VF, what about Fuji and its issues, how about Sony and their lenses, Nikon, Canon etc., on and on.

Yesterday, i spent some zen-like hours stretching 4 printed K5 canvases and stapling them onto stretcher bars. I;ve got 4 more canvases coming in and some existing stock. A local wine merchant is letting me display my pictures for the month of April, and he provides the wine for the monthly art walk reception. He's got room for 10-12 of my pics which will be great. In May there is a promising juried show in a nearby town, etc.

2 of the pictures i stretched were recently picked (in print form) at a local club as 1st place in BW and 1st place in color categories. The BW picture is particularly nice, and at 20x30", looks as good at 1 foot as it does at 40 feet.

I'm going to let all the new cameras sort themselves out without my help and spend more time, i hope, using the K5 - sure to be a classic we'll look back on with fondness. By the way, i hope Pentax does the Nikon thing of allowing the K5 to stay on shelves along with its replacement for several months.

looks like you've been busy with your work, congrats on getting it displayed in such a public space!

I've had a similar experience myself over the past few days- i realized i hadnt printed anything of mine for a while so i decided to go through a month or so of photos and print a few out at 13x19 to adorn my rather barren walls. high-ISO comparisons and test charts are nice, but nothing quite hits it home and shows you just how capable the camera is like a nice big wall of prints.

Good on you for posting this thread. Yep, my K5 and I are good friends and it hasn't disappointed me yet. I miss my K10d and my K20d is lonely now but the K5 was the one I was waiting for.

Last year I decided to put K-5 to a test. I took one of my pictures and had it printed on a paper 1meter long. The amount of detail is incredible. Too bad for Pentax, I do not need to save up for the 645D... APS-C is enough for me.

By the way, here it is: https://www.pentaxforums.com/gallery/photo-porn-29589/&u=4784

We've finally gotten around to decorating our bare walls at home; while not printing at the sizes you plan to, I'm definitely looking forward to seeming some of the output at larger sizes!

I've only had mine a couple of weeks but I'm similarly happy with it!

I'm not sure if you talking about when the best time to buy the K-5 is, but I would say (based on K-7 sales before the K-5 was released) that about now or within the next couple months is a perfect time. In other words, it's not going to get much cheaper than it is now...

After 12 months: I still have to read the manual

For something as obvious as exposure bracketing

Very nice, phil. Still love your Volvo flash shot

Thanks for the comments guys! With Ricoh fully behind their DSLRs to the extent of issuing a lens map, its all good.

And i keep my manual beside the bed

I sort of wonder what Pentax will do to try to entice me to buy the camera that follows the K5. I have owned in succession, a K100, K10, K20, K7, and now 2 K5s, but I would be more than satisfied shooting with them for a long time to come. It is just such a fun camera to use and its images have so much room to work with in post processing.

I think my wife might call that 'looking for an excuse'. And, she might not be too far off the mark.

I'd be all over the current K-5 prices, but my wife keeps asking me what's wrong with my K20D.... and not as good as a K-5 isn't an acceptable answer. I need to drop it or something if I want a K-5.

find a friend with a k-5, severely underexpose a shot at iso 80 and then boost it by 6 or so stops in post. pretty sure that'd be a pretty good argument for why you should get one
