PENTAX K-5 Firmware Updating to Version 1.13
===========================================================================

* Firmware is the software that runs inside digital cameras.

Updatable models
K-5 digital SLR cameras running
Firmware Ver. 1.00/1.01/1.02/1.03/1.10/1.11/1.12.

How to check version
Turn the power on while pressing the MENU button.
The Firmware version is displayed for about 5 seconds at the center
of the LCD monitor.
Perform the above operation without inserting the SD/SDHC card
containing Firmware in the camera.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * [Caution] * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Be sure to use fully charged battery (D-LI90)
If the camera turns off during updating due to lack of battery power, the
camera will become inoperable. If this happens, a charge will be made for
repairs even if within the warranty period.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Updating Procedure

1. Provide a formated SD/SDHC memory card for the update software.
The downloaded file is self-extracting.
The following files are extracted.

readme.txt : this document
fwdc209b.bin : Firmware

Copy the above Firmware file [fwdc209b.bin] to the root directory in
the SD/SDHC card.
If your computer does not have a card slot, you can copy the firmware
update file by inserting the SD/SDHC card into your camera and then
connecting the camera directly to your computer.

2. Insert the D-LI90 battery into the camera and confirm the battery is full
by battery level indicator then turn the camera off.

3. Insert the update SD/SDHC card (prepared in step 1) into the camera
and close card cover.

4. Turn the camera power on while pressing the MENU button.

5. "NOW LOADING" appears in the LCD monitor, and will change to the
"PROGRAM UPDATE". At the bottom of the LCD monitor,

CURRENT VERSION 1.00/1.01/1.02/1.03/1.10/1.11/1.12
UPDATE VERSION 1.13

will be displayed.

6. Press the four-way controller to select "YES" and press the "OK" button.

7. "UPDATING" appears on the LCD monitor and updating starts.
Please do not under any circumstances switch off the power before the
update is completed.
It will take approximately 90~150 seconds to complete update.

8. When update is completed, the "COMPLETE" will be displayed at the left
bottom of the LCD monitor, then turn the camera off.

9. Remove the update SD/SDHC card from the camera.

10. To check the Firmware version in your camera, turn the camera on while
pressing the MENU button.
Check that the version displayed in the LCD monitor is "Ver.1.13"
The camera automatically starts up after about 5 seconds.

(Caution)
When updating is finished, the update SD/SDHC card still contains the
Firmware file.
If you want to use this card to take pictures, delete the Firmware file
first.

I installed the new firmware a few days ago and no problems. It seems to focus a bit faster, although what I am hoping is that the system freeze I just had will be addressed by this. After turning it on and off a few times and finally re-formatting the card, things seem to have settled down. I like this camera, but I think this is its Achilles heel unless firmware takes care of it. BTW, this is a great forum. Thanks to all for sharing their thoughts and information, it's been very useful for me.

Have you used a focus aid and calibrated your lenses using AF fine adjust? In my case, each of my 3 AF lenses needed different amounts of fine adjust and it fixed my front/back focusing problems. My Tokina AT-X Pro 28-80 f2.8 needed almost the maximum adjustment of 9 (or -9, I don't honestly remember which direction).

I used a Spyder LensCal for this.

Edit: I checked the AF fine adjust for my Tokina, and it is -10, not as originally stated.

But when I bounce the flash ON-camera, I get overexposure every time.
Just made a quick test, shooting with bounced 360FGZ on my K5, at various distances in a room, closest at half a meter, in TAv and P Mode. All shots are well exposed. It seems to depend on the camera. Mine is ManufactureDate: 2011:09:14

bit late to the party but that gave me chance to read people comments about AF fixes before i did upgrade so i did some before and after of same objects and i see huge change in AF performance.
before i had to set -6 to get 50/50 spot between inddors and outdoors, now i reseted AF fine tunning to 0 and my worst lens (sigma 17-50 f2.8 hsm) works really well now no metter the conditions, just as good as when used with live view focusing.
i'm yet to test it real night conditions under indoor lighting but my basement test with minimal sunlight going in under the house seem spot on as well so i expect no change there fingers crossed.
even my old FA50 wide open at f1.4 is sharp and crisp like never before with AF

only sad thing is that we had to wait for this fix for so long, i virtually stopped using my K5 that i got in 2010 because of this AF mess, i could find my way around it but i do photography for fun and it was just getting too much "ok lets dial in different AF setting yet again or shots will be ruined"

EDIT: now that got dark in my office room i did tungsten light AF test and still with fine tune AF on 0 (off) my FA50 focuses spot on even wide open !!!! I hope this is not a dream

@Croc - since you are seeing such a huge improvement, it would be good to know what version of the firmware you upgraded from

V1.10

the odd thing is improvment is now gone and no i'm not crazy
i wonder if there is relation to battery level because this just makes no sense.

both most used lenses now act as they did in past, perfect outdoors and need -6 for indoor lighting

Generally it's always a good idea to upgrade.

From 1.01 it is definitely worth doing as most of the main fixes were in 1.03 so that is the most significant jump in upgrades
