I've updated my k5 to 1.13. Granted I'm a *beginner*, compared to previous 1.12, I seem to have noticed a slightly different behavior AF.S autofocus.
So now, in most cases, when I press the shutter button halfway, the focusing ring moves slightly beyond the point of focus, then back, and finally is placed on the optimal focus.
I speak of very fast small displacements, about a millimeter, however, seems to me that in AF.S - before - this "right-and-left" of the ring was not there, and the optimum focus was reached without this "vibration". This happens with my 18-55 and 55-300, not with 40ltd, using central focus point.
However, the end result is a perfect focus.
Have you noticed something similar after updating?
Thank you.
I've noticed similar "new" focusing behavior, but have not taken but a few snapshots since updating to 1.13. I hope to try it out more this weekend if the weather is nicer. Unfortunately, winter has returned the past few days...

I agree...just installed 1.13 today and took the camera out to a local botanical garden to test a lens. AF seems a bit different...perhaps a bit "snappier". I am not sure if this is due to firmware changes or changes I have made in using AF as a result of the couple of threads I have recently read regarding AF point size. Most likely a bit of both I would say.

Yes, that's where it is but nothing happens. Think I will PM GoldenRGuy as he seemed to have had the same problem
Did it work?

Yes, I figured it out before I got your pm. Did what was told to you once I figured out what was meant by "root". Took it out of the DCIM folder, (think I put it there?) and just put it in (in my case) the "I" removable Drive ;no folder. It updated just like everyone said it should.
Thanks for getting back to me just the same.

Never tried previous firmware. Confirm the AF is snappier than the April released firmware.

AF is definitely better in low light now.

Updated my K5 and tested with the *16-50 and *50-135. I notice that for both lens, the AF is faster. Yet to try it out in low-light though...

ok just updated my k5 and did some test shots
and I also comfirmed that af is slight faster, but A LOT MORE ACCURATE!!
also in low light situation (a lot of iso 6400 and 12800 shots, and still perfect focus)
tested with pentax-f 35-70mm

center point af area "seems" to be smaller.
ex: before the update, when i focus on the no.8 button on my cellphone, release focus, and try to focus on the no.5 button, it wouldn't re-adjust focus (the green dot indicate focused);
after the update, when i focus on the no.8 button on my cellphone, release and re-focus on the no.5, it DID re-adjust for finer focus.

the distance between the no.8 and no.5 buttons are very small, yet the camera is now able to adjust it.
the end result is of cause a perfect focus!

good job pentax, you have my thumbs up!!!

I have been holding off for this upgrade as it seemed , at the beginning (when it was first released) that not much had been improved except perhaps for the speed write for SDXC/SDHC cards.

Now, almost everyone agrees that it has made a differrence in AF speed and accuracy!

Good reasons to upgrade now !!

Thanks guys.

I think it's terrific that every single firmware upgrade for the K-5 improves the autofocus. Now, it can focus before you even aim it!

Seriously though, I hope it does. The only two complaints I have about my K-5 are low-light near-focus and consistently bad bounce flash overexposure.

I'll try it tonight, and I'll test both problem scenarios. Fingers crossed!

Bonsoir,

I upgraded, but did not notice any dramatical improvements ... still watching other K-5 users' feedback.

Hello !

Il also confirmed AF is snappier. I've made a lot of tests with a focus test chart and these lenses : DA 35mm F2,4, DA 70mm Ltd, DA 55-300mm and Sigma 17-70 F2,8-4,5

Before 1.13 i had to set fine AF corrections (+3 with DA 35mm, +5 with 55-300mm, ...).

With 1.13 focus is very fast and accurate with fine AF correction OFF. (and with normal or low light)

Well I updated to the new firmware version and my K-5 autofocuses even when off. I mean, it focuses accurately and all, but even when the camera is off. Seriously.

But really(REALLY) seriously now, didn't notice any significant improvements in regards of speed and or AF accuracy. Maybe it's because my K-5 meets my expectations, and is quick and accurate
