Breaking News! Pentax K5 Trashes Canon 1Ds MK III on

weather sealing; 77 weather sealing against 76 on Canon flagship FF!

Now, the K3 just need to have articulated screen, dedicated video button, 120fps in 720P video with full time manual control, better AF-C, 33 AF points, and of course loads of WR prime and zoom lenses.

You're not the first to realize this, and the same holds when compared to new Canon EOS-1D X.

There is something to note about this: the K-7 and K-5 have 77 seals, while the EOS-1D X has 76 seals—yet the K-7 and K-5 have fewer control points than any EOS-1 series camera. The D-BG4 battery grip adds an additional 43 seals.

Can this mean that PENTAX weather sealing is better than even a Canon EOS-1 series camera?

Just means the K-5 body has more openings and buttons, doesn't it (i.e. the grip connector)?

A Canon EOS-1 series camera has more control points than the PENTAX K-5. Both cameras have a unibody magnesium alloy casing. For a more thorough discussion of this topic, see https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-dslr-discussion/177558-how-does-pe...g-compare.html.

You need seals for the holes in the system, and I don't see any difference in this area, so there is no benifit from having one more seal to close the one more hole.

Not necessarily. I believe that Pentax uses layered seals in several places instead of a single gasket. If memory serves from the last time this came up the K5 actually has fewer openings but more seals thereby making it even less likely to fail (all other things being equal).
