Does it matter when my K5 was made?

Got my K5 from B&H today. I've noticed a few people who've got theirs recently have a manufacture date of January or February, but mine was made back in September of 2011. The shutter count is 1 though (the picture I took to get the EXIF data).

Is there any reason I should be concerned because it's older? Could it be a refurb or something? Have any improvements to the manufacturing process occured since September? Does sitting in a warehouse for a few extra months hurt the camera at all?

Just wondering why other people are getting more recently manufactured cameras than me, and if it matters.

My camera (ordered recently) was a return, and it was made over a year ago and had a shutter count of 760. My new one (it's replacement) was made 3 months ago. It's probably not an issue. Not everyone does first in first out inventory. I doubt it matters.

I don't think it's an issue- obviously it hasn't been used, and cameras made that late didn't have stain issues or anything like that.

As long as Pentax considers it new, and warrants it the same way, then I'd say it's a non-issue. I'll buy refurbs as long as I understand the warranty. After a certain point, it's going to be a used item anyway.

Shoot more, worry less.

I have similar issue. I just got my K5 today from adorama. The serial number is 4073XXX, which kinds like even earlier than yours. I don't get a chance to check the shutter count right now since my lens is still on the way. I will update my result tomorrow. Btw, what's the serial number of yours?

Pentax do not use consecative serial numbers so the serial does not indicate the age of the camera.

I bought mine in January from B&H and it has an Oct build (w/0 counts)...NO issues! I think you'll be fine.

The Pentax body I returned was in the 40's and it was a year old, I'm wondering how the guy who says K-5's aren't numbered consecutively knows that. So what exactly is their numbering system for the K-5? How do they keep from issuing the same serial number to more than one camera? After a brief glance through the serial number data base it looks to me like they are consecutively numbered, but I willing to listen to other explanations. Also what is the "Internal Serial Number" and why is it different?

See what happens when you start poking around the exif? Now I have all kinds of questions that will never be answered.

Some random serial from the data base and manufacture date..

They are completely in sequence as far a as I can tell, except for one. The one that is out of sequence is not numbered with the Pentax numbering system and could have been misinterpreted. That's probably enough to be fairly certain they are numbered in sequence but that there may be exceptions. Although you have to guess that it is an automated process and that the numbers are assigned in sequence when they come off the production line. Somehow the thought of some guy at the end of the line randomly assigning serial numbers doesn't really appeal to me.

I already check my camera. The shutter count is 1, and the manufactured date is 01/18/2012. The serial number is 4073xxx
However, I still dont believe pentax just assigned the serial number randomly. I think mine might be rebuilt completely after some big issue.
Anyway, i will keep mine since the shutter count is from zero.

I just received my K-5 from B&H today and it was also manufactured in September 2011 with a shutter count of 1 (the test shot). I haven't used the camera yet other than to get the shutter count and manufacturing date, but I did notice that there seems to be a speck of dust underneath the rear LCD glass and I had just taken it out of the box for the first time. My K-x (2+ years old) has no dust under the LCD. I'll have to figure out what to do about that later today...

Well I rescently bought my fifth K-5 and there are no differences between the 2010 and 2012 production units that I know of. The numbers are following up, but there are some obvious gaps in the sequences.

I just received mine on Wednesday and it had a manufacture date of May 16, 2011 and firmware v. 1.01. Mine was the first picture taken with the camera and it was not setup with the language when I first turned it on, so it was a new camera. I guess that there were a lot of K-5s sitting on a shelf somewhere. I updated the firmware to v. 1.13 and everything is fine.

I believe there is a protective clear film on the screen. The dust spec is probably trapped underneath it. I doubt that a Pentax warranty would cover replacing it, but it is probably very easy to do. You might want to search the forum a bit. I remember seeing some pics or a video on how to replace the film. That is if you can't get a replacement camera from B & H if that is what you want to do. My guess is that they will replace it for you.

That's too many K-5's.

In fact, I recently opened a sort of shelter for K-5's. A boarding house, if you will.
