K5 + Pentax AF 240 FT flash combo

hi

I'm thinking about buying the mentioned flash (I can get it for 30 $). As I understand it, its AF spot beam goes further than the one on the K5 so that should help AF in low light + its twice stronger than the on board flash. But I have a few questions:

a) will my DA* 16-50 get in its way?
b) can it be used in auto mode? also, If I only use its spot beam, does the camera have to be in manual mode?
c) is it any good?

I never used a flash before and I thought this unit could be a nice start to experiment and maybe later be used as a backup
