Because I Was Mucking Around With Settings...

the camera starts doing a focusing dance in AF with a green square that zooms in and out. How do I abort this feature without resetting the camera?

I suppose this happens in Live View?
Any way, try the battery in-and-out trick, the one in the body if you have a grip, if this doesn't help, send it in...
Sorry for your troubles.

when you are in liveview the phase detection doesnt work, so it uses contrast detection, thats why you see the green square...
if you want the phase detection during the livevew hit the menu button go to the first tab menu # 4-> liveview and select the autofocus method you want.
if you select phase detection in liveview, consider that when it focuses the screen will be blank because it needs the mirror to be down.

Thanks, I'll try that. Another question. With an FA lens, what mode are you in when the "A" is switched. In/out?

You mean the aperture ring? When the ring is on A, that's the mode where all metering modes work fully, and aperture is controlled with the body. Keep it on A unless you have a reason not to, and there aren't any good ones that I can think of (as long as it is on the K-5).

Well, the obvious reason would be when using extension tubes or teleconverters without A contacts. With just lens and body, you're absolutely right.

Yes, exactly. Keeping it simple for now...
