The individual camera in question might be defective.

Yes but live view isn't always an option in bright sunlight, and then you run into the weird thing where the IR remote won't focus in live view. Plus I just prefer the OVF.

I know, that's why it's only a workaround and not the preferred solution. But if you use a tripod you can use the OVF to do the composition and then switch over to LV and shoot. It's not great but it works.
