Not Sure If This AF Thing(and maybe the K-5)Is for Me.

Went to the Zoo today to finally use the K-5 for something meaningful. First up was the Flamingo exhibit. For some reason, because it was mating season. a large plywood was was erected in the middle section of the viewing area with only the opposite ends available for pictures.

1) I had the wrong tripod head installed making composition difficult,

2)The camera started "chuffing" like squirrels guarding their territory.

3)DIdn't have a second body

4)Forgot the camera's strap.

5)When I pressed the AF button, the viewfinder would go dark to AF..I'm sick and tired of not being able to take a pic w/o all the squares/triangles constantly zooming back and forth. I won't use a lesser than the '5 since they look so plain, seem almost featureless(the '5 is my first DSLR)and are too small.

If it gets worse, I'm selling everything. Get your wallets ready.

Why are you using Live view?
It only zooms in LV, not in OVF

Used VF the most of the time. I use the AF button to focus, but the VF would blank out as if I were in LV. I should point out that this was my first time using my Tammy 70-200.

@LeDave. No switching. Would divert funds to guitar aquisition, completion of home speakers being built and dedicated audio room.

The VF only blacks out as you take the photo (and the mirror flips up for a split second), or if you are in LV. It doesn't black out otherwise.

It did for me. I also had the RAW/FX set to take a preview pic. Would do so no longer. Think I should re-set the camera?

Maybe you are accidently activating the DOF preview? It doesn't black out the VF but makes it go dark if shooting at narrow apertures.

I believe it's one of the custom menu options, i sadly need to go so will answer it later with clear directions.
But i'm almost certain you can, i have seen the option.

Well there are 2 AF modes with liveview, one uses the sensor and is called contrast AF and the other uses the special AF sensor and is called phase AF for the later the mirror needs to be down.
