HDR Question

Does anyone know if during the days of wet chemical/dark room film processing, there was a process that rendered images similar to what one can achieve using HDR software? Or is HDR unique to the digital age?

I believe that there were images created as early as the 1920s that did essentially the same thing, if in a more cumbersome manner.
