what is the function for this little ring on DA 18-135

HI all

I am using DA 18-135. Could anyone tell me what is the functionality for the little ring on the rear side of the lens? And how to use it? My dealer told me if I use it improperly like in MF, it could be burnt.

I hope you mean the little grippy thing just below the red box? Because you just highlighted your zoom ring's focal indications.

That second ring is the manual focus ring. It allows you to manually focus the lens. And because the DA 18-135 has Pentax's Quick Shift technology, your dealer is incorrect. Quick Shift allows the user to rotate that ring to manual focus at any time, regardless of the camera being in AF or MF mode.

Jindesu is correct, the small ring closer to the lens base is for quick-shift (something like manual override) feature allowing your to fine tune the focus.

Thanks for your reply. Is there a link for telling me how to use it properly?

I think that you will learn how to use it very easily by just trying it out. You can try using it in manual mode (find the focus switch on the left side of your camera body and switch it to Manual) first. Try to take pictures by turning that ring slowly to get things in focus - the focus indicator should light up once you reach focus.

The viewfinder should come into focus as you turn the ring - but it may be difficult so you just practice at it.

Not to hijack this thread, but I have been thinking about getting this lens for about a year now. This week I was asked to shoot an outdoor event where it would be perfect, so I purchased one at our local camera store to replace my manual focus 28-80mm lens. All I can say is wow, am I happy. The photos are sharp, a little fall off in the edges, but that is all. The main thing I like is how fast it will focus. I usually manual focus a lens, but this made shooting the event so much easier. Anyone thinking about one, go for it. There was only one in St. Louis that I could find, do not know if that is an indication they are not going to make them anymore. B&H is also out of stock.
