I sometimes do that as well, because controlled digital grain usually looks better than digital noise, although it does appear that the K-5's noise pattern is not too offensive.

Auto ISO is 80-3200 for me, 3200 shows just that small amount of noise that cleans up nicely with minimal NR. Very seldom I manually set 6400 if needed, thought 3200 is usually enough for me. Once I used 12800 for a shot of my daughter (lit only by a 12W bulb and laptop LCD), downsized to 1024px wide it looks ok with moderate NR.

Also the ISO steps should be taken into account. It might add more steps in manual setting, but I find it beneficial to use the smaller step settings to help dial in not going to high, especially when tailoring the auto ISO curve.
