The K-5.

Is sheer, unadulterated GARBAGE! Two weeks after the button falls off, the camera informs me that no card is installed. I replace it with a new one which the camera refuses too possibly load. I then retry the first and that too is refused.

Are you sure it's not your memory cards but the camera?

Be specific - what did you replace - the button, or the camera, or just the SD card?

And what type of cards are you using - yogi-bear brand or genuine Sandisk? Did any of them work before? Did you format them all in camera, or on your computer, or use the cards with another non-Pentax camera at some stage? Are the cards being inserted right?

Funny. I guess the Canon MkIII I had was a piece of garbage as well since it had to go in for the mirror fix. Perhaps you would be better off posting at dpreview?

My lens had been stuck on the camera for two weeks as of today. I was trying to take pics of my youngests birthday party when I forgot I didn't have the card in. The card was inserted about five times with no problems aside from the body not being able to read it.

Thinking that the particular item might be faulty, I substituted another and discovered that it wouldn't stay in. I tried re-inserting the original with no luck. Without a memory card, you could still take a pic before receiving the "no card" message. Now, I get "Memory card error".

Why would I do that? It locked-up two weeks ago and wouldn't turn off. The button vanished the same day and now, I won't want able to takes pics of my daughter's party.

Sorry to hear about your problems. I've never heard of the K-5 not being able to read cards before, but you having the same problem with two bodies in a row without the memory card being the problem, is quite staggering. Hope you get everything figured out whether it's from another reply here or from Pentax customer service.

EDIT: Does your serial number on your K-5's start with a 3? If so that may be the case, all the earlier models tend to be plagued with problems.

The card will not stay seated. Minutes before, it couldn't be read.

Sounds like the card is physically damaged if it won't stay in the camera. Worst case, the damaged piece is either the slot itself or the card has broken the holder somehow.

Is the locking tab on the side of the card(s) still present? Can the card be read by a computer? Possible to format the card? Check for broken plastic "spacers" on the card contacts?

Where did you buy the card? I and many others have found that low priced ebay or no name cards are unreliable. Get a good one from a reliable source.

I guess I am confused. You say it's a piece of garbage and that it does not work properly. Solution: exchange it!

Sounds like operator error to me.

Try these things.

If the card wont stay in the camera:
Make sure you are inserting the card in the proper direction.
Try another card and see if that one will stay in.
Inspect the cards for physical damage.

Once the card is able to stay in the camera properly try these:
Make sure the "lock" tab on the side isn't set to "lock".
Put the card in your card reader or PC and see if it can be read.
If your PC can read it, try to format the card then put it back in your camera.

Do these steps, then reply and tell us what happened.

If you re-read my post, you'll see I've done those things except the using the card reader. The card (s)physically WILL NOT stay seated in the slot as they want to pop out.

Check to see if anything i inside the slot. Shake it out. Re-isert card slowly and see if it clicks in. Switch on camera.
