Any own a k5 & K30?

I recently had to return a k5 and 18-135 wr kit as the lens was a complete dud. After sending it back I briefly thought about going to a d7000 until I read about the horrific oil stain problems many are facing and I would rather deal with af issues any day than get stuck with a problem like that. For some reason while I've owned Nikons, Canons, and Pentax cameras over the years, the pentax cameras just always felt right to me and my heart has always been with them despite the af always being rated as lagging behind the competition.

I'm interested to know from anyone out there that has both a k30 and k5 the following:

1. The k30 is advertised to have an improved af system, does the k30 have a higher level of accuracy and "keepers" compared to the k5 in your experience?

2. Are the size of the af points the same, or do they seem smaller in the k30 for better focus accuracy?

3. If you had to choose between one or the other, which one would you keep and why?

If you wait a little you could try out the K5n that is coming soon, or the new flagship to follow. Sorry you had a bad experience, but these things happen; I sent my first K5 back for sensor stains and dust under the LCD, but it was an older release.

Just look on the forum and you will find your answers.
Same question was asked a week or so ago and more before that.

1. in my case, yes.

2. they seem smaller on the K-30.

3. the AF accuracy was of most importance to me so I went with the k-30. In fact I bought 2.

If AF accuracy was identical amongst those two then I'd have gone with K-5 because of higher fps rate, larger buffer, more battery power, optional grip, more features (software and buttons/dials).

Haven't you also recently bought and returned a Nikon D3200 too?
You sound like a camera store's nightmare.

I don't have a K-30, but I believe that for example deadwolfbones has them both and IIRC, that is almost exactly what he has said about the cameras. Search the forum for his recent posts.

well I do use K-30 and do not have any of those problems with it or with K-5 , K-7 , K-x or the Q.
Today I was photographing with DA 18-250 and ( with the exactly same settings, lens corrections etc) K-30 was taking ~1sec to take a picture and show preview with histograms etc, K-5 needed 4.5- 6sec to achieve the same, it felt painful waiting for K-5 to get ready for the next photo!

I have had a K-5 since shortly after they came out, and bout a K-30 for my daughter when they cameout (before the price went down)
but I played with it before I gave it to her.

Main things I noticed:
a) the controls are a little different,---charcteristic of those used on mid level pentax cameras are found on the K-30
b) the shutter sounds different
c) the K-30 has no 'top window' to view the settings.

While there can be little things one might prefer one over another, I considered the two cameras mostly the same. My Daughter needed one to take year book sports pictures for her school where she teaches, and was struggling a bit with the K-7 she ahd due to it's low light limitations, and my judgement was that the K-30 would do as well as as any of the alternatives for that purpose.
