K5 II prices

The K-5 II will retail for $1,199.95 body-only, $1,349.95 for a kit with a 18-55mm lens, and $1,549.95 for a kit with a 18-135mm lens. The K-5 IIs will retail for $1,299.95 body-only. Both camera models and all kits will begin shipping in October

from Pc magazine

thanks

More details on prices and specs at pentaximaging dot com. I assume the K-5IIs is $100 more because it will come with special software? If not it should be cheaper!

I presume it's more expensive because Pentax envisage selling less of them, or can justify charging more. I am guessing including or not including the AA filter makes little difference to production costs apart from the higher cost of a more limited production run.

They are following Nikon's lead on the extra charge.

Given that the II has the standard sensor and IIs is different it makes some sense that the IIs will be slightly more expensive. There is also the production and returns issues to keep in mind as well. The IIs is likely to sell fewer numbers so costs would be slightly higher but returns of it are likely to be higher as well. Why? Because some will not understand that there is a downside to no AA filter and when they see those patterns in their images they will complain that the camera is poor, not working, etc. and return it. This will add costs to the sale too.

These price are very acceptable about $300 less than when the k-5 was introduce. The saving is due to reuse of major component and minimal chance on the production line

True, but it may also reflect their new approach to selling their system - Camera = Inkjet printer and Lenses = Ink. Sell the cameras cheap and get them on the ongoing purchases.

Nope, it is probably cheaper to make all K-5II models with the Low Pass Filter installed and have someone at the end of the line remove that with a tweezer than to make a LPF less K-5 and then install the LPF. But that tweezer has to be bought hence the more expensive price..

That's one expensive set of tweezers. Docrwm's answer is most probable.

But once you've acquired a good set of lenses,
it's the cameras that are the ongoing purchases,
once every two or four years (one or two model upgrades).

So this pricing model can be seen as a reward
to loyal, long-term customers.
