Focus stacking...

So now having a macro lens, extension tubes, and a teleconverter has opened a who new world for me!!! Very exciting...

More than anything is my appreciate for what 'shallow' depth of field really means... So of course, now I want to try some focus stacking... What is the best gear for this? Some kind of rail? Any recommendations (and direct links to it on ebay or amazon)?

Best software?

Advice/tips??

Thanks!

Ken

Registax is free, mature (it is up to v6), under active development, and apparently very powerful:
'Free software for alignment/stacking/processing of images'
RegiStax- Free image processing software

I haven't used it myself yet, but have been meaning to give it a go.

I thought REGISTAX was for astro shot with webcams. I could be wrong, as usual.
For real focus stacking, zerene is as good as I have found.

DS stacker nor Registax did not do this. zerene did. Very different SW for different purpose.

I believe this was a stack of about 18 shots, all razor thin in DOF.

Judging by some of the shots I've seen by pinholecam, using the Q also lets you get amazing DOF in macros, thereby reducing the need for stacking. Seems helpful for astronomy too.

Something else to think about.

Registax is for astro work. It would not know what to do with razor thin DOF macro shots. It would probably throw all of them out, because in general none would be sharp enough to include it into final stack.

Perhaps not THE best software, but I suggest you try one of the Combine Z programs. They do a good job, and they are free:

Regarding advice/tips, you should visit this forum page:

I"m a bit of a stacker, have a look through my stream. Lots of info on what sort of stuff I use. Bottom line, I've had a lot of flickr success with zerene and reversed enlarger lenses. Ie this was Flickr Explore front page
