Lost x-sync port screw-on cover for K-5, can it still be used in rain without damage?

I was using my K-5 for my studio lighting class today. I needed to take the x sync port cover off to use it for a strobe. Is my K-5 still weather-sealed? Is there a replacement that's big and rubbery that won't easily get lost?

I took mine off, and didn't feel any air passing through when zooming in and out with my lens, so I think it may be sealed from the inside. As far as the port itself, I believe it is a "dry" contact that actually has no voltage running through it. I would say you're ok, I mean think about the hotshoe...

You can order a new cover from many places. Just Google. In the meantime, use a small piece of black plastic electrical tape. It will protect the connection and not allow dust to enter, but will not be waterproof.

Unfortunately, the camera's not water / dust resistant without the cover: check out your manual on X-sync Socket page.
The part can be ordered, however. It's called a Pentax PC Socket 2P Cap. Pentax part number: 31042

Yes, I have no idea where Pentax got that idea of a tiny plastic screw-on cap instead of some rubber protector connected to the camera.

You could DIY a keeper leash by gluing a bit of black nylon string to the top of the cap and then tie the cap though the strap lug next to the K-5 (K-7) logo.
