K-5 vs K-5 IIs Comparison Request Thread

This afternoon (October 29th), we will be publishing our in-depth Pentax K-5 II/s review. On November 5th, the review will be updated with a larger collection of comparative samples between the K-5 II and K-5.

In this thread, I will be accepting threads for comparative requests. Put each request in a reply, and please state only the following:

-Lens (if it's a Pentax lens, chances are we have it)
-Aperture
-ISO
-Day or night
-Distance to subject
-Additional requirements (be brief)

You may also second others' requests.

Can you please post some comparison results for night photography. Some snaps for K5-II tested with DA* 16-50 F2.8. Also if you could post samples with sigma 50-500 that would be great.

Thanks for opening a thread like this, Adam

Hmm, what I'd like to see:

AF comparisons with K-5/C and K-30:
  • with lenses f2.8 or faster, both wide and telephoto
  • subjects in close distance, like the lined-up dolls done before for the K-30, both in good light, tungsten, and poor light
  • comparative instances in which the cameras would start using the AF assist beam
  • AF-S: speed/decisiveness at high ISOs (night/indoor) : ideal to simulate concerts/churches/corporate seminars
  • under tungsten lighting
  • AF-C: subject tracking, from near to far and v.v.
  • AF-C: subject tracking, panning from one side to another
  • multiple AF point selection: consistency of the camera (especially in portraits) to choose the right AF points
  • Live View
Also, a comparison of the K-5 IIs screen vs. the K-30, indoor (with fluorescent lighting) and outdoor, in bright daylight

Lastly, if you could record video and find out if the horrible clicking sound from the K-5/C is still there... thanks again!

It's still there Pentax seriously hasn't touched anything other than the AF module and LCD screen.

I don't have a K-30, so no can do on your request, unfortunately. This thread is only for K-5 vs K-5 IIs comparisons.

-Lens SMC Pentax-D FA 50mm F2.8 Macro
-Aperture = peak sharpness
-ISO = lowest possible
-Day or night = day
-Distance to subject = peak sharpness
-Additional requirements = personal preference would be for the USAF resolution chart, but the subject needs to be something which demonstrates resolution

I'm just suggesting this lens because it has a reputation for being the sharpest, and my idea is to take the lens resolution out of the image as much as possible to demonstrate the difference in the camera resolution. I'm sorry I haven't been specific about the aperture or distance, but I don't actually know what aperture would be ideal for this lens.

Meta requests:
  1. Please use the same lens copy on both cameras.
  2. Avoid different exposure times or other such differences.
  3. Ensure that the focus points are consistent and include non-cropped shots so that people can convince themselves.
  4. Use a tripod whenever possible.
  5. Try to avoid comparing JPG engines.
  6. If you use AF, ensure optimal AF micro-adjustment on both cameras.
  7. Ensure that each camera obtained optimal focus, e.g., by focus bracketing and subsequent selection.
  8. Apply the necessary capture-sharpening to shots from the K-5.The Bayer AA-filter is designed to create (necessary) blur and this blur must be undone (ideally with deconvolution, but unsharp mask type sharpening is OK).

  • Determine an appropriate sharpening, which is needed to "overcome" the "blur"/"softening" effect of the Bayer AA-filter. At least add pictures with this post-processing step to all comparisons.
  • Take pictures with the same lens and identical settings (time, ISO, aperture, manual WB, ...) of:
    • a color chart;
    • large (un)structured areas with uniform colors (red, green, blue);
    • ...

Just curious if the AF speed and accuracy difference between K5 and K5IIs is also be reduced due to the old screwed / SDM lens capability limitation. Please also try to compare AF relating aspects on the 18-135WR DC lens!

Thanks Adam!

Second the above request.
______________________

Also, K5 vs K5IIs same shot (4 frames total, 1 frame for each body/lens pair)
  • ISO 80
  • 2 different lens, same focal length, same lens speed, using the best f stop for each of the individual lenses - across the face of the lens (center, boarders, corners)
  • Two different levels of lens quality, for example (focal length is in-material) - significant difference in lens database ratings, with one lens being extraordinarily good,
  • Select a focal length somewhere in the range of 28mm to about 85mm (very low lens distortion)
For example:
  • SMC Pentax-M 40mm F2.8 rating 7.5
  • SMC Pentax-DA 40mm F2.8 Limited rating 9.67
Thanks!!

DA*300 @ 50 yards, daylight, f4 or close, iso 800 or less, target an object with fine details.
(intent is to discern quality of crop for distant wildlife)

One topic where expectations are high is high-resolution macro photography (could also be lunar or planetary photography, but I assume macro will be more practical).

so:

Lens: Any Pentax dedicated macro lens
Aperture: f-number at or below f/5.6
ISO: Around base ISO
Day or night: Ring flash
Distance to subject: Closest focusing distance
Additional requirements (be brief): If you have bellows or extension tubes for some extreme macro, that would be perfect!
