Mike Johnston, The Online Photographer, comes clean about his K-5

We knew he bought one, and that he loves the Pentax primes, but after he announced he bought a K-5, the online camera-experience posts after that were about the Sony A900. Now that he's gone over to a Nikon D800, he posts about the K-5:

The Online Photographer: This is the Pentax K-5 Post

Really, it's a great recommendation for the K-5 and K-5II's, with just a little "not enough lens choice" throwing a wrench in the works.

Sounds a little lame to me. He doesn't use the "in the same zip code as perfect" camera because there is no 24mm lens for it? So that's the only focal length he uses?

Surprising he didn't try some of the other limiteds -- 21 or 31. I agree with him, though, there is a need for more lenses. Seems like a fast, sealed prime between 20 and 14mm would be a great addition to the lineup.

I hate to say it, but I also have to agree with him. Lately, I've gone to using a dual-brand system with a canon FF to accompany my K-5. He really does put it perfectly, the K-5's body is pretty much perfect, but the lens selection is why I got myself a 5D rather than simply getting a second K-5 when I had the chance.

With that being said, you will find me bitching and complaining about the canon as well, the body is nowhere near as perfect as the K-5

Pentax does need a 24-28mm prime. I tried the DA 21 and there was too much wide angle weirdness for everyday use.

Agreed on the 24-28mm prime. I'm waiting until I can afford the FA*24mm, but it'd be nice to get a DA*24mm.

How are Sigma's 24 and 28 mm lenses?

The DA 18-135 is really strong at 24mm... but of course you always have more problem with CA and flare with a zoom. (With the exception of the Sigma 8-16 which actually seems to outperform most primes.) Maybe just get an 18-135 and put a screw in it to lock it at 24mm.

I didn't notice that, but the first thing I wondered was "If he isn't using it, why doesn't he sell it?" I thought he was dumb, now I think he's smart.

I've heard the Sigma 24 isn't so great, but the 28 1.8 is quite fantastic. That being the case, I would rather get the FA*24 or the FA*31 over the Sigma. In addition, I want to wait to see if Pentax would consider coming out with a DA*24/28 because of the weather sealing. It would be the ideal walk-around lens for me.

I resorted to finding the FA*24 to get that crucial 35mm equivalent. solid lens, the finish looks like it was born on my K-5 Silver, but it's huge by Pentax prime standards, even the other FAs. ironically the Full-Frame FA 35mm f/2 is much smaller and lighter in comparison.

looking at the tiny, newly introduced Limited-like Olympus 17mm f.1.8 (35mm equivalent), I realize I'm sick of the compromises and workarounds dealing with APS-C. looks like Michael Johnston did the same.

epically sad if true considering Pentax is his biggest advertiser.

Oh I noticed that all right. It's his statements about the body ergonomics and quiet shutter, etc. that are positive press for the K-5, and unless you haven't noticed, the mostly identical K-5II series.

If it was a camera review site, or some up-and-coming blogger trying to get lots of advertising and links, you might be right. However, this blogger is known for writing what he thinks, admitting his (and other's) faults, and basically not trying to be an opinion leader. Perhaps that's why he is an opinion leader!

or it's him shrewdly trying to sell his K-5 without simultaneously pissing off his biggest advertiser.

ultimately, he admits barely using it and using other cameras instead (and not a K-5II). not exactly an endorsement. if his opinion matters so much, why doesn't that last bit matter?
