Using K5 as a fancy webcam?

Is this at all possible for the rare moments I'd like to Skype with a loved one in HD???

I don't think so, because someone would have to write a driver that supports that kind of functionality.

It overheats in 10 minutes so not really useful as webcam if it works....

It's possible: I was interested in the same thing a few years ago, but it never happened because I couldn't justify the price for the hardware.

Basically you use the HDMI output of your Pentax camera and connect it to an HDMI input card on your pc. I haven't tried it myself, but from what I remember reading, a company named Blackmagic manufactures these pci-e cards. It should be possible to use it as a webcam or stream it on the web if you want. It's quite an expensive solution and I think you'd be better off with a good webcam for the price.

I remember I couldn't find a driver to use it directly via USB. As Adam pointed it out, you need someone to write a driver for that. I believe this has been done for some Canon models if I remember correctly.

It would be a lot cheaper to just buy an HD webcam...

Too bad. I figured if my K5 could record HD video it could just be used as a webcam too but like boris suggested I might as well get a HD webcam
