I've been using the K5IIs a lot with the DA*300mm + 1.7xAFA for a handy 510mm handholdable setup. Here are some of the Kingfisher shots from my early morning foray last Saturday.
Loving the setup and looking forward to summer and lots of Dragonfly and Butterfly opportunities.

How does the DA*300 and teleconverter combination work in AF? Is it better on the IIs than with previous cameras?

That was one of the first things I tried, using the DA*300mm + Kenko Pz-AF 1.5x TC. Unfortunately, it's still as bad as the K5 so no improvement at all. I think it's down to using PD-AF as when I switch to Liveview, using CD-AF, it snaps to focus first time. That's why I use the Pentax 1.7x AFA more, not only for the longer reach, but also for easier focusing.

My Bigma works well with the Kenko TC and focuses a lot better than the Pentax SDM lenses, without any hunting. Maybe that's why Pentax hasn't yet released the long awaited 1.4x TC that's been on the roadmap for years, they just can't get it to work properly?

Thanks - I figured that. I had no luck with the Tamron 1.4x TC on any SDM lens I tried them with on the K-5. Anyway, good results there. Thanks for sharing.

Amazing shots! Thank you for sharing. I'm new to the DA* 300 and, so far, I can't seem to get sharp shots with it, and that's without a teleconverter. It's not the lens (I've checked it carefully), it's my technique. Strangely, I can get razor sharp shots with my DA* 60-250 at the long end, but that extra 50mm seems to defeat me.

My bird shots above are with DA*60-250 as well. If I went longer, it would be a prime for sure. I need to see what I can do with manual focus, but I'll need to choose the subject carefully. Those Kingfisher shots are outstanding.

Here are a couple of shots of a little crab I spotted at the beach in Boracay, Philippines:

Both were shot with the DA*50-135, the second photo being a 100% crop of just the area with the crab in it. (or I think LR stretched it a bit since I had it resized to 900px on the long side)

I can't believe I can actually see the grains of sand... without using a macro lens.

by the way I adjusted the orange channel to have lower luminance so that the crab can be seen better. The sand (and the crab) are both closer to white than it looks here.

This is a butterfly called a "Common Crow" that I captured in flight while it was displaying the feathered organ that it uses to spread pheremones. At the time, it was hovering over its potential mate.

Awesome photo, Adrian. I don't think any N. American butterfly possesses such an intricate pheromone organ.
