O-RC1 (new) and K-5 (new) no talking ...

Hi can anyone help, please ?

I've a new K-5 which I've set in Remote Control mode (both the single shot modes tried). The LEDs flash on the camera to indicate, I assume, it is in standby mode. Then when I point the new O-RC1 at the back or the front sensors on the camera the shutter does not fire.

I'm assuming I would not expect to get any feedback (ie flashing/beeping) from the remote, so I can't tell if it is working. I don't have a cable release to test the camera is working, in remote control mode.

I'm a bit stumped. Is the remote faulty ? Or the camera ? Or have I got something else to set to get it to work ?

Thanks for any help.

PS My new K-5 was a replacement for a new, but faulty version I received before Christmas. The faulty K-5 was stuck in manual exposure mode. It was replaced immediately, but I fear that I now have another piece of faulty Pentax gear. Or is it me ?

You can test the remote by pointing it at a cheap webcam or cell phone camera with a weak IR filter. You'll be able to see the IR LED light up, usually a blue/grey color.

Hi Elliot, I pointed it at a phone and saw the blue light. So it is then the camera at fault or something I am doing (or not doing).

Any more ideas, please ?

Thanks

In my K-5II handbook it says that after using the 4-way controller, and the LED flashes, you have to press the OK button, then focus, then use the rc.

OK I have it working now.

I updated the firmware from 1.01 to 1.13. That made no difference. What did make a difference is that I set the camera to Mirror-up remote control (p149), rather just remote control (p145). This worked. I then could just use the standard remote control settings (p145) from then on. It is as though somehow the remote and the camera needed to register each other, which could only be done in mirror-up mode (p149). Unlikely or what ?

Anyway, I have now got it working, and I've updated the firmware too.

Now I can get on and use my new camera properly, I hope ...

One more thought ... when I got the devices to "register" I did hold the remote button for MUCH longer. I now can just press it normally, as I was doing before, to get the shutter to fire.
