Holy crap, thank you jatcat!
That seems a lot more affordable than a replacement body and more reassuring than dissecting it myself. I'll try them after I talk to some local repair shops.
Thanks again, I've never heard if them.

Sorry to hear about your accident. Once you get your camera repaired, I would strongly recommend getting a laminated glass LCD screen protector. My friend had a similar accident as you did, the screen protector broke but the LCD screen itself survived unscathed.

I put one on immediately after I bought it new, but it mysteriously cracked. After I took it off, I never got around to replacing it.
I'll definitely use one in the future.
Strange thing is, when I look at more and more, I think the camera landed on the body between the screen and the dpad. The outer glass isn't broken, just the LCD itself.

One of the online sellers says that they will install the screen free of charge, you just have to send it to them. Either way, its a good deal from what I can tell and the screens (other than the imprint on the glass) seem to be a commonly sourced part. Good luck.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune.

I just did an on-line quote at a camera repair facility - LCD repair for the K-5 is $144. Here is the specific of the repair on the site:

QuoteQuote:

Choose this repair for all of your LCD screen problems such as:
  • Cracked LCD screen
  • Photos don't display properly on the screen but look fine when downloaded to the computer
Maybe contact them to see if this includes the entire scree replacement or not.

After this thread I went on ebay and bought the ACMAXX 2.7" HARD LCD ARMOR PROTECTOR for the Pentax K-x. I learned from your pain.

Good for you. I have one on my K-5 and I've been happy about it several times. Which reminds me, I think I need one for the K-01

I've never used a screen protector before, so with that in mind - how would a screen protector stop the screen from being destroyed being dropped like the one or the OP's? I thought their purpose was to just stop the screen from being scratched.

The ACMAXX LCD Armor is a hard Poly-carbonate screen protector with UV Low-Reflection Coating. They claim that surface hardness reaches 5H V.S. and that regular LCD coating is lower than 2H.

They also use these photos to sell them.

I've had one on the K-5 since day one. There were quite a few testamonials to the ACMAXX screen protectors here about 12-15 months ago when I bought the K-5.

Hopefully Pentax uses Dragontrail glass on the next series.

Just picked one up for my K5 IIs - thanks for the tips. And very sorry about your loss, Manacho, but sounds like you might have some good options.

I was getting my camera ready to do some bird hunting last night; when, me being all thumbs, drops it onto one of my chair legs.
It landed directly onto the lcd screen

I'm within my original warranty, but that's not going to be covered.
Is there anyone who can testify to a complete lcd replacement cost (not just the glass)?
My heart stopped for 1s when I saw this picture.

My sincerest condolences!

Update:

After almost a month, my camera returned from United Camera. It works perfectly.
For $144 they replaced the LCD and the entire glass enclosure with authentic Pentax parts! Not bad!
My only concern is that I feel air blow by my face when I "pump" my WR lens. I may have to clarify if the weather seals are intact before braving some rain.
