How Far We've Fallen.

I was shooting at a local Table Tennis club last week and had this conversation with German going to one of our local Schools.

Young German: What camera is that?

Me: It's a Pentax K-5.

Young German: I didn't know that brand still existed.

He also said i had a "Big Objective"(he meant the lens).

My wife and I just returned from a Caribbean cruise. On board the ship with 3k passengers, and perhaps the same number of cameras, I saw one camera bag with the Pentax label. I couldn't see what kind of camera it contained. Some of the duty free shops in St Thomas had a small selection of Pentax products, and number of third party Pentax fit lenses, but none of the customers seemed interested. A very small shop off the main drag had a brand new, sealed box K100d. The price tag asked for $550 US. I didn't try to bargain.

Well it was probably a safer assumption than thinking you had just acquired a 560mm!

I know what you mean but, in 2009, I was hiking with the family at Bryce Canyon and ran into a German guy. As I walked past him, all he said was "nice camera." (I was packing my K20d an 18-250 lens.) I turned to him and he had a K10d with the same lens. We ended up becoming friends as he and his Argentinian fiance were eventually driving up to Alaska and they parked their rig in our driveway for a few days. As I said, I know exactly what you're talking about. When I owned my Spotmatic F and my K2 in the film days, Canon would have been considered a lower life form than Pentax. That certainly is not the case now. Somewhere along the line (it was their first foray into autofocus for me) they lost their vision, focus - whatever you want to call it. I'm hoping that they can recapture some of their former market share but, we'll see if it's too late or not.

You want to really have some fun? - go to Bryce Canyon or Abiquiu or Mt. Washington or Monument Valley with a K1000 or K2 or SP-F or LX TODAY. Then pull out a K-01 or K-5 and swap the lens.

The reactions are priceless.

(I did that at a conference in Santa Fe last month - but everyone there already knows I'm a nut).

I hope Pentax will never be as popular as Canon is here in Croatia. Since I switched to Pentax it's like I'm invisible:-)) Everywere I shoot nobody ask me anything. When I was shooting with 7d every time I pull out the camera security would come and ask me if I have permision to shoot.
Now with K-5 I can finally shoot where ever I want what ever I want) I'm free)))
God I hope full frame will be just as small)

That's funny, I kind of noticed the same thing but my flash has this big plasticy bouncy thing on it and that usually gets people really interested!

Well, that's a common mistake, as the german word for lens is "Objektiv".

Is that an exact translation? How do you say "Camera lens"?

I was at a balloon festival a few years back and taking a bunch of nice shots with my K-x, and when I went in later and uploaded to flickr, I noticed someone else was shooting from almost the exact same place. Then I realized they had a K-5 according to the EXIF data! We were probably almost shoulder to shoulder and didn't realize it.
